??Navigating School Choices -- It's that time of year when families face significant decisions about schools. ??? Here are some considerations to ponder when searching for the perfect fit for your child: 1?? Classroom Dynamics: Observe how teachers engage students. Are all voices heard? I couldn’t agree more that relationship development is essential to cultivating success for children. The successes are not only in terms of academic achievements but also: ?? Socio-Emotional Competency ??♀? Self-Awareness ??? Communication In order to truly get through to children (or anyone in my opinion) a level of trust and respect needs to be established before all else. Children need to trust that you are willing to see and meet them as they are. Children need to witness respect and validation of their experiences before they can learn to reciprocate the same. We desperately need to ensure our school’s have a balance between educational quotas and advocating for individual children’s needs. ??? I haven’t worked in a formal educational environment like the paraprofessional within this article. However, in working with more than 100 children at a 1:1 level over the last four years, some things have consistently held true for me regarding success of care and learning: ???? Children learn better when their caregiver or teacher acknowledges the student’s unique qualities. ? When the adults closest to the child are able to accommodate the child’s individual needs, it becomes much easier to identify, constructively redirect, and pacify troubling behaviors. Recognizing triggers can also make it much easier to identify and prevent barriers to learning. ?? Children retain more information when it is personalized to their interests. ? Children I’ve cared for are more inclined to learn new information and practice new skills when their special interests are infused in the lesson! My belief is that at all ages, giving personal meaning to the things we’re learning is what allows us to see value in a lesson and therefore to retain the associated knowledge. ??? Children (and adults) are better able to weather the struggles of life and learning when they have the vocabulary to describe their experiences. ? Our learned vocabulary plays an enormous role in how we perceive and interpret the world around us. As adults, we may find it hard to understand information within legal documents, terms of service, medical bills, and insurance. Unless we’re taught about these subjects and instructed on how to decipher their verbiage, we may encounter a life-long struggle with essential tasks of living. Now imagine a child who has a very rudimentary understanding the world around them. If we don’t provide children the developmentally appropriate vocabulary to understand life around them, they are left to fill in the cracks with their current knowledge. When children don’t have the words to describe what they experience, this can be particularly dangerous if they are experiencing abuse, neglect, or trauma. We must help children build their vocabulary AND simultaneously allow them a space to safely express how they experience the world. ?? #SupportOurYouth #SupportOurTeachers

In all honesty, most people will focus on the mistake first. Imagine that list of times tables had been written by your child. Imagine it had taken them ages to write them all down. Imagine the courage they’d summoned up to hand over their work. Imagine the excitement inside them waiting to hear what you thought of it. Imagine the damage that focusing on the mistake will cause them! Imagine the enthusiasm for learning being diluted. Yes, that error does need to be corrected and should be done but after positives are pointed out. This is what happens to kids up and down the country when they complete a piece of school work, hand in a worksheet or write a story. The teachers, due to pressures placed on them from above, must highlight errors as evidence that they are moving children forwards. There is no time to focus on all the positives because the curriculum is so out of date and so jam packed full of content. There needs to be more focus on social and emotional learning, more focus on life skills around money, property and mindset. Then we can move forward in how we educate children and make a real impact on their lives. #childdevelopment #education #school #socialemotionallearning YoungMinds Jacob Young MP Helen Kennedy Young Enterprise UK Sharon Davies Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation THE LINK (REDCAR) CIC Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council

I wanted to share some feedback I recently received from an educator after having done a training on positive guidance. Going into it, I knew I would emphasize relationships over management, something that many trainings on positive guidance/challenging behaviors fail to make the main message. I wondered how my content would be received by these public school teachers. I felt encouraged by the general response from this group of TK and K educators. Every attendee felt they walked away with more knowledge and strategies, music to my ears! Here is one comment: "Amy Chiu is so empowering! Her ideas gave me so many new ways to approach children in conflict and understanding. Look at the whole child, be a detective! Thank you!" - Educator from Ventura USD Helping educators help children is my purpose, my why. With more government funded programs rolling out for younger age groups than before, it is imperative that stakeholders align their practice with an understanding of child development and SEL/trauma-informed care principles. Positive guidance shouldn't be a prescriptive formula but a mind shift towards CONNECTION. Kudos to the teachers for their willingness to enter into this deep work. Challenging behaviors and conflict are the norm in early education, and the more we lean into it the more we (and the children) can practice valuable life skills. Could I help your organization with this topic or another ECE topic? DM me for more info. Do we need to find ways to increase the job satisfaction of teachers? Then we need to address the social-emotional needs of students. Advocating for the social-emotional needs of students can be a great and effective way to overcome behavioral issues and create a truly collaborative classroom. Teachers want to engage with their students in authentic ways and allow for students to pursue their passions through learning. This is why teachers teach! SEL can allow for teachers to create genuine relationships with their students, have more fun teaching, and teach content more effectively. This leads to the satisfaction that can only come from knowing your class is truly having a positive impact on the life of your students. I am also a firm believer in the idea that SEL is a lifelong process. Empowering teachers to address the social-emotional needs of their students is a way to also address social-emotional needs of teachers. The conversations and discussions SEL can create are beneficial, engaging, and important for students and teachers! https://lnkd.in/g68TUqKG

One cannot address the trauma, unless one is part of a safe and secure environment that encourages relationships and allows for developing resources of resilience, as proposed by Kim Golding's (2015) Pyramid of Need. When I take this pyramid and apply it to schools it brings up the need to have robust pastoral support systems which must prioritize emotional wellbeing and safety. The humans within school walls need psychological safety, before they can become part of a system that allows them to explore, learn and thrive. When students and teachers feel supported in navigating challenges, they can fully engage in the learning process. ?? Fostering Connection and Belonging: Moving up the hierarchy, we recognize the importance of fostering connections and a sense of belonging. School counsellors play a pivotal role in creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and understood. By offering guidance, empathy, and a listening ear, counsellors build trust and rapport, nurturing a culture of belonging that strengthens the fabric of the school community. ?? Supporting Emotional Regulation and Learning: As educators, we understand that emotional well-being is integral to academic success. By prioritizing pastoral support, we equip students with essential skills for emotional regulation and resilience. School counsellors employ evidence-based strategies to empower students in managing stress, anxiety, and interpersonal challenges, fostering a conducive environment for learning and growth. ?? Impacting Pedagogy and Teaching Practices: Beyond individual well-being, robust pastoral support has a profound impact on pedagogy and teaching practices. When students feel emotionally supported, they are more receptive to learning, leading to enhanced classroom dynamics and engagement. Teachers, in turn, benefit from a more conducive teaching environment, enabling them to focus on innovative instructional strategies tailored to meet diverse student needs. ? Conclusion: In essence, prioritizing pastoral support within the school environment isn't just a nicety—it's a necessity. By embracing Golding's need hierarchy and investing in comprehensive support systems, we create nurturing spaces where students and teachers can flourish academically, emotionally, and socially. Let's continue championing pastoral care as a cornerstone of educational excellence. https://lnkd.in/d6usAJN2 pic courtesy: https://lnkd.in/dt-M65jE #PastoralSupport #Education #SchoolCounseling #Pedagogy #StudentWellbeing #TeacherSupport
