Touring around last week I was passing pastures of different livestock thinking about where we are with marketing in the good food sector. I've been a part of quite a few sessions over the years with really smart people on the topic of "how to build consumer demand" for X ingredient/food. For many different good food categories (wild seafood, responsibly farmed seafood, grassfed meat, bison, pastured pork, indoor grown produce, etc. etc.) There are always good learnings and nuggets in these conversations. And also, I usually feel like the question - "How do we build consumer demand for..." - is not a very empathetic one, a little self absorbed. Good consumer marketing is really empathetic. With this question, I think we're too focused on the production differentiators that, in most cases, are not the most motivating factors for people. And sometimes we promote those differentiators to the detriment of fellow brands that may also have a very good product even if produced differently, which also isn't very empathetic or helpful to the cause of a healthier system. I think this question leads all of us in the good food space down a path that perpetuates generalized messages that aren't consumer centric, lack so much context, create more confusion in the last mile, don't help fellow producers and brands, and ultimately don't influence shopper considerations very effectively. We work to our own detriment planting this kind of thinking: Bison has more [insert beneficial nutrient] than beef or lamb Wild seafood is the most sustainable choice Regenerative organic is superior to regenerative Grassfed/finished beef is always superior What I think most people seeking quality food actually care about? Connection to and understanding of source. Care and resourcefulness in production. Craft vs. mass produced. Transparency vs. cloudiness. Accessibility In all of these discussions I think we'd make more progress together if we brainstormed around questions like: What can we as food brands/industries do to help our target shopper? To understand? To get them what they want where they are looking for it? What can we do to make decisions easier? To reduce confusion and fear? The future belongs to those open to possibilities. Though GMOs stir fears in some, we must not close our minds. There are always risks with any new technology, but also great potential rewards if developed carefully. We owe it to the generations after us to explore GMOs thoughtfully, weighing benefits and risks through reason instead of recoiling reflexively. If they can enrich nutrition, resist disease, better withstand droughts - should we not at least consider their potential? Progress depends on asking what could be, not just accepting what is. Our ancestors improved crops through selective breeding long before GMOs. Perhaps in time we will view this technology as simply the next phase in that age-old quest to partner with nature, feeding more people more sustainably. But we will only realize such a future by facing our fears, questioning assumptions, and letting evidence guide us towards the common good. The path forward calls not for snap reactions but open and discerning minds. We must believe progress comes to the thoughtful, not just the stubborn, and have faith in human ingenuity guided by moral wisdom. If we can manage that, if we can bring light through open debate, then the promise of any technology rests not in what we fear, but in what we might discover.

A Study in Cover Crops | Part 2: Food for the Soil ?? The first rule of organic farming is that what we take from the land, we must return in equal measure. One way we achieve this is by planting carefully chosen cover crops in the wintertime. A favorite here at Frog's Leap is the fantastic faba bean. These small but mighty legumes have bacteria on their roots that fix nitrogen; a vital nutrient that the vines will use for healthy growth and water uptake. As John points out, healthy soils produce healthy vines, which in turn create vibrant wines that could only be from our corner of Rutherford.
