At Sober Outdoors, we’re committed to supporting individuals in recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) by creating structured, impactful outdoor experiences and a reliable community that helps people thrive post-treatment. Many of our members are at a critical point in their lives—either considering inpatient treatment or re-entering the world after completing it, often in need of extra support to rebuild. Over the past two years, we’ve seen tremendous growth in our membership, community offerings, and capital raised, thanks to the support of our dedicated members and volunteers. But with this growth comes the need for additional expertise. We’re actively seeking volunteers with experience in nonprofit marketing, organizational structure, fundraising, and outreach to help us strengthen our foundation and expand access to our programs. Your skills can make a transformative difference in the lives of those we serve. Through our scholarship program, we work to make our events accessible to those who may need assistance with gear, event costs, or finding their footing in a sober community. Yet, the demand far outpaces our resources, especially as we serve a growing number of underserved members who are facing financial and personal challenges. Our volunteer Community Outreach Team provides critical support, helping members find treatment options, join Sober Outdoors, or simply offering a listening ear. We’re here to make sure no one feels alone in their journey and to provide access to the outdoors as a path to healing. You never know where you'll find your next partner in community impact! ? At our recent SparkTank event, 10 local organisations pitched for a share of $50,000 in Community Investment funding. While the competition was fierce, something truly magical happened: unexpected collaborations began to emerge. Who knew poo pits could bring people together? ???? The local pony club, seeking a sustainable solution to manage horse manure, pitched their "poo pit" project. Enter the Buninyong Men's Shed, whose members, also present at the event, eagerly offered their woodworking expertise to build these eco-friendly structures. Healing Through Nature... A Match Made in Heaven? ?? Ballarat Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) presented a project to create a therapeutic garden for survivors. Coincidentally, the Leigh Catchment Group was also pitching, with an ambitious goal of planting 40,000 trees over two years. A conversation sparked, and a remarkable community partnership started to emerge. Finding Comfort in Unexpected Places. ?? Babies Above, an organisation supporting families experiencing the loss of a baby, pitched their project to create curated care boxes to be distributed by our local hospitals. As a result of the event, representatives from the Ballarat Crematorium as well as Grampians Health both approached Babies Above. These potential community partnerships were born from a shared understanding of grief and a desire to offer support. SparkTank served as a powerful reminder that community partnerships can be found in the most surprising places. ? Heart of Ida is proud to have received Recovery Funds to support Long Beach's low-income seniors, who were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our efforts included: - Assisting seniors with Emergency Rental Assistance applications - Connecting seniors to free internet services and computing devices through the Digital Inclusion initiative - Managing the Long Beach Aging Services Collaborative to link seniors with local service providers - Sharing health education and addressing social determinants of health through our Promotoras/Public Health Champions However, the needs haven't gone away. Why helping out is so important. Assisting those in need is crucial for fostering a compassionate society. Many people face daunting challenges such as poverty or illness. By extending a helping hand, we can profoundly improve their lives. Charitable organizations like the Red Cross and Oxfam play a pivotal role in providing essential aid to those in dire situations. Helping others goes beyond just providing immediate relief. It reinforces our sense of community and connection. It cultivates empathy and understanding, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds. For instance, Habitat for Humanity not only builds homes but also empowers families through active participation. Supporting the underprivileged can have far-reaching benefits for society as a whole. Research demonstrates that communities with strong support systems experience lower crime rates and greater well-being. Programs like Feeding America address hunger, which is fundamental to children's health and academic performance. Volunteering, donating, or raising awareness can all significantly contribute to alleviating suffering. Even small acts of kindness, such as supporting local food banks or volunteering for community service projects, can make a substantial impact. By helping those in need, we can create a more resilient, fair, and supportive society for all.

It's time for another #UNSDG and we're up to #SDG3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. This must be one of the most applicable to our work as #landscape professionals, where so much of what we do as a community can hugely benefit the health and wellbeing (both physical and mental) of everyone. Caveat: when designed, delivered and maintained well! So, if you're looking for an SDG to embed into your business strategy, this is an excellent one to choose as much of your work is likely to support it already. A few more ideas: - Donate blood and/or register for organ donation - If you haven't already, adopt organic (chemical-free) practices in your own garden and landscape specifications and/or support charities like Garden Organic - Cycle/walk more and drive less - Opt to work on projects like this, beautifully designed by Elaine Cresswell https://lnkd.in/g6Hx_UQq
