In a recent knowledge translation session, I was reminded of a powerful line from a movie: "Words are capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it." In #publichealth, we often label certain populations as "vulnerable" when discussing poor health outcomes. But what does this term really mean, and why do we continue to use it? Are we helping or inadvertently causing harm by framing these populations as vulnerable without addressing the underlying causes? #Empowerment in public health should mean tackling root causes, not just identifying vulnerable groups. By framing people as vulnerable, we risk implying that they need special treatment or that they are inherently different. We might unintentionally overlook the broader context: why are these populations facing poor health outcomes in the first place? Most often, it’s systemic issues—like racism, patriarchy, and power dynamics—that create barriers to healthcare access and lead to poor health outcomes, not an innate vulnerability. It's worth reflecting on how we discuss community health, especially if our aim is to empower people to make informed health choices. We need to move beyond these labels and shift our language and our focus—toward dismantling the systemic obstacles that hinder equitable access to health and away from terms that might obscure the truth. Are we raising awareness of why certain communities struggle to access healthcare, or are we finding ways to empower them and challenge underlying systemic barriers? I'd love to hear your thoughts and perspectives. For more insights, check out this article - Katz A, Hardy B, Firestone M, Lofters A, Morton‐Ninomiya M. (2019). Health equity can only be achieved by recognizing and responding to systemic racism and all forms of oppression, including the unequal distribution of resources, which have created persistent health disparities.?? ? THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PUBLIC HEALTH The term "health" within the realm of public health denotes the comprehensive well-being of both individuals and communities, encompassing physical, mental, and social dimensions. Conversely, public health is primarily concerned with disease prevention, life extension, and health promotion at a population level. Its core objectives entail ensuring universal access to essential health services, fostering hygienic environments, and providing education to facilitate informed health-related decisions. The significance of public health within society is paramount. It serves a critical role in disease prevention, outbreak management, and the advancement of overall health. By addressing fundamental determinants of health, including socioeconomic factors, educational attainment, and healthcare accessibility, public health initiatives strive to cultivate healthier communities and mitigate health disparities. Public health serves as the cornerstone of a prosperous society. It not only shields individuals from illnesses but also fosters an enabling environment wherein all members can pursue healthy and gratifying lifestyles. #publichealthawareness

As someone who leads an active, healthy lifestyle, I find it frustrating that tools like BMI label me as "overweight." It's clear that BMI, a metric rooted in outdated, racist and biased perspectives, perpetuates weight stigma and fails to capture the true complexity of health. We need to move away from simplistic "healthy" vs. "unhealthy" weight labels and the reliance on BMI, and other similar tools in health communications and research. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and meaningful understanding of health that empowers individuals to feel comfortable in their own skin and discuss their health concerns with their doctors - without just hearing they need to lose weight. Hopefully, this change is one of many that will help lead our healthcare system into a welcoming and shame-free environment. #HealthAtEverySize #WeightStigma #HolisticHealth #InclusiveHealthcare #BodyPositivity #BeyondBMI

On Juneteenth, we reflect on how far we've come and how much work remains in addressing the systemic disparities that minority communities continue to face, including a lack of access to basic healthcare services and underrepresentation in clinical trials. In particular, this lack of representation leads to gaps in treatment efficacy and overall health outcomes. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we must acknowledge these disparities and commit to closing the gap, ensuring equal access to healthcare for all.
