"Ship Husbandry" #Diving is an activity carried out on vessels by divers which includes: Hull Cleaning, Propellor polishing, Repairs and Inspection in lieu of dry docking for class approval and intervention during marine incidents. As a global activity there are many areas where there is no appropriate legislation, this has resulted in unsafe working practices being normalized and a regular toll of fatalities. Though data is poor this is estimated conservatively at one a month from a small working population. I'm pleased to announce that IOGP approved on behalf the Safety Committee to form a Ship Husbandry Expert Group inclusive of Safety Matter Experts (basically #IOGP, #IMCA, #ADCI, #OCIMF and relying on stackeholders). The objective of this Expert Group is to improve awareness and understanding of key controls that positively influence safety and improve the supply chain around Ship Husbandry activities. How does a sailboat winch work? A winch uses the principles of torque and tension to apply a force: a sheet (line or rope) is wound round the winch drum, then is secured to prevent from coming loose. A hand crank is inserted into place at top, then the user rotates the crank in clockwise or counterclockwise direction to pull in the line. Sounds simple, right? The machine that makes this magic is anything but.
