"There’s this perception that Black kids that make mistakes are not also our children. We’re not seeing the children in our community and city as ours or as the future. If we did, we’d be more intentional in how we speak about them, interact with them, and teach them.”? ? ????????? ? One of most recent additions to the LCCR team is our first ever Strategic Storyteller, Cierra Chenier. Within her role, Cierra will be leading LCCR’s efforts to combat the harmful narratives surrounding Black youth and work with LCCR’s policy team, the Youth Justice Advocates, and other community partners and allies to develop campaigns aimed at changing how the public views Black teens in our city. ? ? Despite the likelihood that Black youth in Louisiana are five times more likely to be incarcerated than their white counterparts, they too are like any other kids who want to be safe, loved, and cared for by their community. When they make mistakes, as all teens do, they need to be afforded the opportunity and grace to learn from those mistakes in an age-appropriate ways that don't include incarceration. We look forward to seeing the fruits of Cierra's campaign work take shape in the new year and hope that you'll join us in rejecting narratives that not only sow seeds of fear of our children but also further criminalize them. Reparations are essential to addressing the deep-rooted legacy of white supremacy. For centuries, Black communities have faced systemic oppression, economic exploitation, and social injustices. Reparations are not just about financial compensation but also about acknowledging the wrongs, healing the wounds, and investing in the future of Black people. By demanding reparations, we strive to rectify historical injustices, promote equity, and ensure that Black communities can thrive. ??Did you know that black people have been enslaved in the United States longer than we have been free? #ChangePolicy From the time of the first African slaves arriving in Virginia in 1619 until the abolishment of chattel slavery in 1865 which is 346 years, black people in America endured centuries of forced labor, exploitation, and dehumanization. Despite the official end of slavery, the legacy of this horrific institution continues to impact African Americans today. The call for reparations for the American Descendants of Slaves (ADOS) is justified by the historical evidence of failed policies that have disproportionately harmed the black community. The effects of slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation, and systemic racism have created a wealth gap between white Americans and black Americans that persists to this day. This gap is evident in every aspect of American society, from housing to healthcare to education to criminal justice to environmental policies. Exhibit A: Housing Policies Exhibit B: Healthcare Policies Exhibit C: Education Policies Exhibit D: Criminal Justice Policies Exhibit E: Environmental Policies

I talked with Dr. Pamela Denise Long about the nomination of Kamala Harris and what it might mean for American Freedmen. We discussed the meaning & value of the term “Freedmen,” what it means to be Black & why it matters, misallocated affirmative action, Barack Obama’s ethnicity, the history of Bantu & Nilotic Africans, Kamala Harris as a metaphor, parallels between Harris & Obama, the question of Harris’s Blackness, Harris’s decision to identify as Black, the influence on public policy, her statements about reparation, her hesitance to commit to direct redress for Freedmen, the context of an increasingly multiracial America, emphasizing the question of resources, remaining tensions between Black and White Americans, when ethnic identification prevents redress to Freedmen, who Denise will vote for in the election, lineage specificity, immigration moderation, the increased number of Black Americans planning to vote, and much more.

This year’s #BlackHistoryMonth in the UK focuses on “reclaiming narratives.” It's about acknowledging and correcting the false portrayals of Black culture and history, while also celebrating the richness and diversity of the Black experience. Black UK citizens make up only 4% of the population but are twice as likely to be arrested than their white counterparts. This stark disparity permeates every step of the UK justice system — from sentencing and incarceration to post-release challenges — resulting in lasting, disproportionate consequences for Black communities. These impacts ripple through all aspects of life, including employment, hiring, and long-term financial well-being. It’s crucial to continue uplifting Black voices and stories not just during #BlackHistoryMonth, but every day of the year. At RBIJ, we’re dedicated year-round to breaking down barriers to equity and challenging the narratives that have long misrepresented the Black community. Our work is committed to justice and opportunity, because reclaiming the narrative is a continuous journey.

Juneteenth marks the day that the last enslaved African Americans finally learned that they were free- over two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. While today is a day to celebrate freedom and resilience, it is also a solemn reminder that for Black Americans, justice is too often delayed. Children of color disproportionately face barriers to resources and opportunities due to discriminatory practices within our society and systems. Implicit biases are embedded in our legal, criminal, and education systems. Within our own community, there are thousands of children each year that need someone to stand up for them and protect their rights. When our children’s lives intersect with the juvenile justice system, they should be treated with respect and provided holistic support to address the root cause of the issues. This #Juneteenth, join us in celebrating the resilience of Black Americans, while also joining us in our fight towards equitable opportunity for children of color- from the courtroom, to the classroom, to our everyday lives. Please note: Our office will be closed today (6/19) in observance of this holiday. #BlackLivesMatter
