Yesterday, together with Jeslynn Soh and Sunita Howe, we presented a wonderful piece of content on the most common use cases for Consumer Intelligence (social and search data), and how AI plays role in democratising the access and utilisation of insights. An interesting question came from the audience on GenAI and how it impacts the evolution of search engines. Below is my take. What do you think? Generative AI is unlikely to eliminate web search entirely, but it could definitely reshape it. It would be more of an evolution, not extinction. I think of search engines becoming quasi launchpads of the search journey, where GenAI will craft summaries, answer basic questions, and point users in the right direction. This will also help users to also transition from keyword searches to a more conversational and interactive experience. I also see some challenges such as Mis and Disinformation and bias in AI models. Ensuring users still have access to the raw web – which the unfiltered library of information, as we know it today – will be crucial. Overall, GenAI is a powerful tool that will augment, not replace, web search. It's an exciting future for information access, but responsible development and user education will be important.
