Taking a relational approach to co-designing the services that impact people's lives. Service design consultant | Writer | Mentor | Speaker
I'm really loving offering co-design support to the Royal Osteoporosis Society ?? Last year I set a goal to move more into co-design and I'm really pleased that I've been able to work more in this space over the last 12 months. A big part of this has been my recent advisory work with ROS on their Osteoporosis Connect programme funded by The National Lottery Community Fund. The programme is focused on developing peer support offers for communities that are currently underserved. What I love about the work is that they are taking a true co-design approach. So much work is badged as co-design but really isn't. ROS are taking the time needed to build a community focused approach by working directly with volunteers who are a part of the communities they are looking to support. They are taking care to build relationships slowly and being super flexible with how each stream of work takes shape. What I've been able to do is advise from the sideline on structures and approaches to use as they progress through the process. This, to me, feels like the right level of involvement for me to have in this work as a designer who is not living with osteoporosis or a part of any of the identified communities. I'd love to do more work like this next year if you have something similar shaped. Find out more about ROS's programme via the link in the comments.

Talent and Partnerships for Inclusive and Collaborative Innovation. Professor of Philosophy, Director of The/La Collaborative and Convener of the Canadian Forum for Social Innovation
Social sciences and humanities research should serve societal and human well-being intentionally. The hardest part is not the research. It is the careful building of reciprocal and genuinely valuable relationships that recognize and benefits from non-academic partners' expertise as a fully-fledged part of knowledge creation. Vivien Underdown and I should write a book about our experience: we both learned immensely from each other. "Building Capacity for Innovation in the Social Sector" is a proof of the concept. It also is meant to provide insights into what is needed to meet the research and knowledge needs of nonprofits. Research design and development was a sustained collaboration between The/La Collaborative at McMaster University and the United Way Halton & Hamilton, and data collection built on the relationships Vivien Underdown, Shawna Mutton and Kirstin Webb and our team built together across Canada that continue to feed our projects: United Way of Calgary and Area, United Way British Columbia United Way Niagara United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin United Way Greater Toronto United Way Saint John, Kings, and Charlotte United Way Peterborough & District Ontario Nonprofit Network. And we worked with our awesome partners at Imagine Canada to make sure what we learned was shared. And we're so thankful to Cathy Barr, PhD for leading the publication. We benefitted from support of a new SSHRC-CRSH-Mitacs funding partnership that allowed us to work with a community-based postdoc. All of these partners are also at the heart of our new $2.5 million SSHRC-CRSH Partnership Grant that will directly address the needs of communities for skills for inclusive and collaboration innovation. Building the relationships that created the conditions for these successes took time and imagination, and it required us, as academics, to leverage and improve skills for inclusive collaboration and innovation we never were trained to have. If our disciplines are to have relevance, we need a research culture that recognizes, rewards and incentivize cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary co-creation. We also need research support and training that equips emerging researchers and future nonprofit leaders for these types of partnerships. We have work to do.
In this new report, Sandra Lapointe and Vivien Underdown argue that it is time for campus-community partnerships that build on reciprocity and genuine collaboration to foster real innovation and systems change. https://lnkd.in/gtQiec4d

Designing and implementing effective approaches measuring grantmaking progress is challenging for #sciencefunders, especially since the value of their work may take years to become evident. ? At a knowledge exchange hosted by Science Philanthropy Alliance, funders discussed creative strategies to determine the impact of their work. These include: - Context-specific data gathering, analysis, and decision making - Integrating a wide range of perspectives in grantmaking efforts - Adopting approaches that leverage both quantitative and qualitative data Learn more about their approaches: https://lnkd.in/gzM6xh2E ? #Grantmaking #Science #Funders
Last fall, members joined us for the Measurement, Evaluation, and Learning shared interests group knowledge exchange in London. If you missed this event, we invite you to read about it as our Alliance Summer Reading Series continues. We helped science funders recognize and address the challenges in designing and implementing effective approaches to measuring grantmaking progress. This meeting enabled funders to develop a variety of creative approaches to determine the impact of their work. We anticipate another successful event in fall 2024!

Mission-driven, parallel entrepreneur applying systems thinking & finance experience to solve sustainability problems: CSRD DMA Data, Net Zero Neighbourhood Creator, Blended Finance, Founder, Civil Servant, Cocktail Bars
Some weekend reading (actually watching/ listening). An extremely thought provoking presentation from Denise Hearn hosted by The Long Now Foundation about how the economic stories that we tell about what profit is are both relatively new but profoundly impactful on society (and skylines) in not very helpful ways. For my historic connections still involved in equity research and investor engagement, but also very much for my newer connections working in the intersection of climate, community and finance. And anyone thinking about how modern neoliberal capitalism must be adapted or replaced as a matter of existential necessity. https://lnkd.in/eFUsnHD7
