How can fictional futures help us strengthen truth and facts online? Imagine a world where reliable, well-sourced, and human-verified information is not only flourishing, but public trust in it is growing. Can this world exist beyond fantasy fiction? How do we make it a reality? These are the questions we want to explore in our panel at #SXSW 2025. Speakers include: ?? Stephen Harrison – Author, “The Editors” ?? Karen Lord – Award-winning science fiction author? ?? Sewell Chan – Editor-in-Chief, Texas Tribune ?? Rebecca MacKinnon – Vice-President of Global Advocacy, Wikimedia Foundation We need your help to bring this important conversation to a broader audience. Vote for our panel to be included in next year’s conference! The SXSW community voting phase runs until 18 August. It is a crucial step in helping to determine whether our panel will be selected. ?? Excited to share my incredible journey as a Democracy Summer Scholar in the 2024 Democracy Summer Program! ?? Over the past few months, I will have the privilege to immerse myself in a dynamic virtual program that focused on enhancing democratic engagement and political activism. Here are some highlights: ??? Engage in National Democracy Summer School seminars: Joined Fellows and Scholars across America every Monday and Tuesday to discuss critical topics such as voting rights, labor movements, and environmental politics. ?? Interactive Workshops: Participate in weekly workshops with peers, fostering collaboration and deepening our understanding of democratic processes. ?? Insightful Speakers: Learned from prominent figures including Rep. Jamie Raskin, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Sherrilyn Ifill. Developing Skills: Enhance my analytical, public speaking, and teamwork skills by presenting insights on democratic engagement and policy-making.

Can grassroots efforts be used to fight the scourge of misinformation? I'm so glad you asked! In our Stanford Social Innovation Review essay, Gabriel Marmentini, PhD of Politize! and I discuss how "grassroots organizations are trusted voices that are uniquely positioned to identify misinformation that impacts the communities they serve, to implement strategies to combat misinformation, and to build communities that are resilient to future misinformation tactics." We leverage examples from Brazil, South Africa, and the United States to make the case. Read our essay today! https://lnkd.in/ezzEcPuV

We're sharing some key resources for anyone reporting on the election or interested in a fair, free, and safe democratic process all month long. Make sure you follow Collective Flow Consulting to stay informed, prepared, resourced and ready for the shenanigans that lie ahead. These resources are valuable to everyone, but especially helpful if you're a writer, creator, social entrepreneur, or culture critic. Yesterday we shared the Committee to Protect Journalists LinkedIn Newsletter and the solid resources within. Today we're highlighting Hearken, Inc from the ineffable brain of Jennifer Brandel. Hearken is a powerful force in developing tools for independent media and they have great stuff on how to build trust with readers and platforms for community news. They offer training on reporting during elections and toolkits on democracy. Learn more about them via link in comments. And check out this amazing toolkit—Democracy SOS they collabed on. You can download the 24 page "Covering Elections and Voting in 2024: A Media Guide" free, no email required. --- Do you have a resource for creators and journalists we should know about? We'd love to share it, and give you a shout out. Let us know down below. ??????? #CitizenJournalist #FreePress #SpreadTruth #Toolkits ftw #DemocracyNow #NewMedia

Hey friends, former colleagues, strangers. etc. I am trying something over on Substack. Calling it Government Works. Exploring how government works—and how government can work better—to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Starting out with a weekly links roundup (opportunities/events/content/etc.) but planning to expand over the coming months to include more longform and in-depth content. The first few editions featured jobs and/or internships from:? International IDEA; The Pew Charitable Trusts; Centre for Public Impact; OECD - OCDE; Basel Institute on Governance; Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University; Ballotpedia; Partnership for Public Service; The David and Lucile Packard Foundation; Center for Civic Design; Power for Democracies gGmbH; The Center for Election Innovation & Research; The Brookings Institution; National Endowment for Democracy; Open Government Partnership; Teaching Public Service in the Digital Age; Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; and many others. Sign up if you are interested in finding out about more opportunities like this, plus upcoming events, media, and research about how we can all work together to help government work better for its people: https://lnkd.in/eyuEAPqq It’s free! With a new post later today & every-ish Friday thereafter (for as long as my interest and the interest of others can sustain it).

“This report summarizes findings from an extensive field and literature scan and interviews with 30 informants, including practitioners, funders, researchers, consultants, and staff members from several foundations. The report makes recommendations for foundations to consider in identifying and working with intermediaries to support racial equity, power sharing, and community voice. An adaptable tool was also created to help foundation staff navigate decision-making points and options for determining when and how to best work with intermediaries.”
