It's so easy to think of levels as beginning, intermediate, and advanced but in ballet there is a level between beginning and intermediate when you're teaching children. (Adult and teen students usually start in this elementary level even though we call it beginning adult.) This period of time is critical for building dancers' foundations and their excitement to continue in ballet. Second Position??? In second position of the feet in ballet, they are in line with the shoulders and rotated from the hips in a turned out position. First position??? First position of the feet in ballet is where an outward rotation from the hips occur which allows the toes to face outwards as well in a natural turnout. Last week my wife and I went to watch the ballet. I had bought the tickets as a present a while ago, but before going had never really thought of myself as someone who would like it (watching football and boxing are more my thing). My girls do ballet classes and love it but watching your children is different to watching the professionals. I was completely surprised at my experience and how enjoyable it was to be mesmerised for two hours. Here's the three things I learnt/was reminded of: 1. Always be openminded to trying new things and experiences - you never know how much you might like them! 2. An appreciation for people who have mastered their craft/art. They say it takes 10,000 hours to master something but to see it in action was amazing. 3. Be prepared for the unexpected - We got stuck in heavy traffic due to an accident on the way which meant we only got there a few minutes before it started despite leaving in good time.
