Are we excluding the best candidates by requiring specific degrees for certain positions? As a former brickmason turned surveyor, I can attest that life experience and on-the-job training can be just as valuable as a formal education. While I believe in higher education and even taught at a local college, I've seen firsthand how unnecessary credentialization can prevent qualified candidates from even being considered. Don't use education requirements as a filter to exclude potential candidates, its just a form of exclusion. Instead, focus on the skills and experience needed to excel in the position. By doing so, you may just find the best candidate for the job, regardless of their educational background. A Closed Mouth Doesn’t Get Fed, Speak Up. I learned this lesson firsthand at 23 when I got my first Foreman opportunity at the Empire State Building. ?? I was working hard, like many of us do, and felt ready for the next step. But I knew that waiting for someone to notice my efforts wasn’t enough… So, I spoke up. I approached my superintendent, made my case, and asked for more responsibility. It wasn’t easy, but I believed in my ability to lead. Because of that conversation, I was given the chance to step up as a foreman in one of the most iconic buildings in the world. One decision—to speak up, changed the course of my career, I never went back. Too often in this industry, were told to just show up. keep our heads down, do the work, and hope for the best? Nope??♂? Staying silent won’t get you that promotion, raise, or opportunity. You have to advocate for yourself and take action. The construction industry can be tough, but if you’re waiting for someone else’s move, it’s more than likely you’ll get disappointed. Advice for the candidates who are actively seeking new opportunities and "serial applying" to any and every role they come across: READ the job description! I know what it's like to come to the decision of "let me just put my name everywhere and see what comes back!" You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, right? Right. However, it's crucial to pause and ensure alignment with the roles you apply for. (If you are shooting free-throws at the crowd, you're missing those shots too). It is equally, if not more discouraging to receive countless rejection emails with no resolution or closure. I'm always open to give feedback to applicants on why they weren't called for a role, but many times this conversation ends up sounding like: Candidate: "Why was I rejected? I feel I am a good fit because of my experience as **insert title that has nothing to do with the job they applied for**" Recruiter: "Thanks for reaching out! The position you applied for requires at least 5 years as a Superintendent in commercial construction, with experience building ground-up hospitals. Do you have this experience?" Candidate: "Well....no but I can learn it!" It is important to consider that a job posting's "requirements" section is not comprised of "preferred qualities," but requirements. Have questions?
