Today we express our gratitude for our generous Oaktoberfest 2024 sponsors Anita Wilcheck, Barrington Bank & Trust, and BOOM! Cult / Robert McGinley. Thank you for your support! Conservation Fun Fact: Here is a glimmer of hope to start your day -- The ozone layer is slowly healing and is projected to recover by 2050. Thanks to the international efforts to ban harmful substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the ozone layer is gradually repairing itself. We love to hear it!

Curious as to the reasons issues related to environmental health are often ignored?…Especially given the interconnectedness of all life. Miigwech once again Winona LaDuke for highlighting #waterislife and to Rachel Carson giving a voice to #silentspring Industries that do not operate by life enhancing and life enforcing operational plans will be the demise of us all. https://lnkd.in/e6qvCxvm

They've been described as the greatest chemical threat facing humankind in the 21st century.? PFAS, known as forever chemicals, have been building up in the natural environment – and even our own bodies – for decades. They are linked to cancers, hormone-related diseases, obesity and fertility issues in humans, and similar health issues in wildlife. But where is this pollution coming from and how much of it is flowing into our rivers and out to sea??This documentary is a terrifying and eye opening watch and features LJMU's Dr Patrick Byrne from Biological and Environmental Sciences. This ENDS Report film is a call to action before it's too late for the planet. #LJMUResearch #LJMUImpact #Environment #Pollution

Fake grass may look nice but it has ugly consequences… ?? * destroying microorganisms, wildlife habitats and biodiversity * emitting toxic chemicals (carcinogens & neurotoxins such as lead, mercury, cadmium, PAHs, VOCs, SVOC, phthalates, benzene, toluene, and carbon nanotubes) PFAS and microplastics in runoff to nearby land and storm drains * creating heat islands reaching up to 200 degrees on a 98-degree day * Emitting methane and ethylene which contribute to global warming * eliminating natural means by which rainfall can be captured and stored. Heavy rains and winds are more disastrous for artificial turf fields. Los Angeles and Pasadena are considering bans on future artificial turf installations and looking at initiatives to replace existing installations due to the environmental and public health concerns. I hope other communities will follow suit and take a hard look at the consequences of using artificial turf. https://lnkd.in/gVj9yZ5t #environment #pfas #pollution #Sustainability #ClimateChange #EcoFriendly #PlasticBan

Nature-based solutions, like treatment wetlands, are a key part of our vision for the future. With a growing population, our sewer networks are having to process increasing amounts of human and domestic waste, so we’re always looking for more natural alternatives. As seen in this BBC article, the power of wetlands is not to be underestimated. In addition to helping naturally remove unwanted chemicals, they also have a positive impact on our region’s river health and biodiversity. Our work with NORFOLK RIVERS TRUST on the #Stiffkey and #Ingoldisthorpe wetlands has demonstrated the true benefit partnership working can have on environmental quality. These wetlands are only the start. If approved by Ofwat later this week, our proposed business plan for 2025-2030, proposes a record investment of £4 billion to enhance the environment. This includes an ambitious goal of building nature-based solutions the equivalent of football pitches. Algae blooms are on the rise across the nation, with a startling uptick in New York’s Finger Lakes. These dangerous blooms create toxins that can be especially dangerous to children, the elderly, the immune impaired, and pets. It’s up to communities to engage in source-water protection to ensure that their water is safe for drinking as well as swimming, fishing, and other activities. Econse has been focused on compact, affordable, and proven systems for more than a decade. Our technologies were recognized in 2018 when we were selected as a finalist in the George Barley Water Prize. Since then, we’ve continued to develop, implement, and innovate wastewater treatment solutions that conserve water and remove excess nutrients before they enter the environment. To date, we’ve helped local farmers and other water-intensive businesses recycle millions of gallons of wastewater and remove 90% of phosphorous—keeping it out of lakes, rivers, and other critical watersheds. #ECONSE #Sustainability #Wastewater #FixingWater #WaterReuse #AlgaeBlooms
