For our final sponsor shout-out, we'd like to thank Davey Tree / Charlie Keppel, Marsha & Charlie McClary, and Woods to Wetlands for their generous sponsorship and participation in Oaktoberfest 2024. How lucky are we to be surrounded and supported by such an amazing, dedicated community! Thank you for being our friends in conservation. This year's Oaktoberfest event was centered around "Animals in Conservation" and included information on invasive species-management, or biocontrol. On a related note, check out this article published by the University of Illinois, covering a study directed by S. Raghu which discusses the biological control of exotic, invasive weeds in Illinois. https://lnkd.in/g_RjcjyB

Australia’s iconic marsupial has been viewed as a food source, pest, mascot and, now, a conservation concern. Scientists are breaking down myths—using genetics, robots and citizen science—and finding new ways to protect the animals. ?? 1,023 unique plant and animal species discovered on our Campus ?? A month-long search for unique plant and animal species on the UT campus resulted in no less than 4,060 observations and 1,023 unique species. This is the UT's score in the so-called 'BioBlitz' (see https://lnkd.in/eiZ_WySU). From 22 May to 22 June, UT participated in a month-long BioBlitz for higher education to register as many species as possible within a defined area and time frame. The programme included birdwatching, dragonfly spotting, and moth surveying, with ITC scientists Wim Bakker and Rolf de By leading the initiative. During their inventory, they encountered some remarkable species. For instance, they identified 119 different species of moss on the campus. They also found the rare Juniper Shield Bug. ‘Since 2000, there have only been 50 sightings of this species in the Netherlands,’ said Bakker. During the month-long BioBlitz, UT members made a total of 4,060 observations, identifying 1,023 unique plant and animal species. Only at Wageningen University did participants record more observations (6,583) and unique species (1,088). (Source: U-Today) #UTwente #FacultyITC #NRS #Biodiversity #BioBlitz

The new Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP) launched today ?? This detailed plan outlines strategic actions to safeguard amphibians worldwide. With a focus on protecting natural habitats, mitigating climate change impacts, reducing pollution, controlling invasive species, and combating diseases, every effort is vital for the survival of these species. Conservationists and researchers from all over the world contributed to writing this book. We are extremely proud to have been involved - two of our experts, Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians Benjamin Tapley and our Institute of Zoology’s Veterinary Research Fellow, Andres Valenzuela-Sanchez led on creating whole chapters within and providing images from the field. When we join together, everything is possible. A dedicated team of scientists and conservationists have worked tirelessly to create this plan, but we need your help to make it a reality. By supporting ACAP, you’re contributing to the preservation of amphibians and supporting work to restore their ecosystems and beyond. Happy New York Invasive Species Awareness Week! This week serves to?raise awareness about invasive species, the threat that they pose, and what can be done to prevent their spread. Our biologists?work to prevent, monitor, and reduce the spread of invasive species within the Ausable River watershed through education, partnerships, and volunteer events.?You can help prevent the spread of invasive species and protect the recreational value and beauty of Adirondack waters by following a few simple steps: ·???????Check, clean, and dry your gear before entering the Ausable. ·???????Do not transport firewood - buy it locally. ·???????Report any sightings of invasive species to New York iMapInvasives.? ·???????Join one of volunteer events?to remove invasive species, like the purple loosestrife?pictured above. ?I found this interesting what are your views? What the guardian is saying well back in the sixties invention of the contraceptive pill heralded the sexual revolution of the 1960s, and now scientists are looking to revolutionise wildlife control by getting animals in on the action. Trials are under way in the UK and elsewhere in Europe of how to get contraceptives into pigeons, wild boar and grey squirrels, with scientists also proposing other rodents, invasive parakeets and deer as other target species. As destruction from invasive and pest species grows, researchers are looking to fill special feeders and bait boxes with hazelnut spreads and grains laced with contraceptives. They believe this could be a more humane and effective way of controlling populations that have previously been poisoned, shot or trapped. The aim is to find “creative solutions”, says Dr Giovanna Massei from York University: “The main message is that the economic and the environmental impact of wildlife are increasing worldwide, and we are running out of options. “Traditional methods such as culling are ineffective, can be inhumane, unsustainable, environmentally harmful, and are increasingly opposed by the public,” ? Conferences are a great place to keep upto date on new research, technological advances, forthcoming new guidance such as the "Introduction to the new dormouse mitigation guideance" and also to network, if you can attend in person. This one is a good one to attend in personor virtually. #cpd #conferences #mammals #themammalsociety #dormouse #mitigation #technology #automaticdetection #thermalimaging
I can not wait to attend this conference, even though it will be virtually. There are a great range of lectures and rapid fire talks. The Mammal Society's 70th Annual Conference. #mammals #themammalsociety #conference2024 #cpd https://lnkd.in/eBT2ZAYF

The Animal & Society Institute invite you to attend the next installment of the Colloquium Series: Talking to Lions: Human-Animal Cultures and the Power of Stories. The webinar will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 12pm ET with Dr. Sandra Swart. ‘If a lion could speak,’ the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote, ‘we could not understand him.’ But lions do ‘speak’ – they communicate in voice and action – and we homo sapiens have long tried to understand them and sometimes succeeded. In this talk, Dr. Swart will show how contact between humans and lions has sometimes shown evidence of mutual comprehension that has been co-created by the changes in human and lion lifeways. Dr. Swart will discuss how, at the same time as Wittgenstein used the lion to illustrate the impossibility of such communication, a real lion-human community were speaking to each other and used this conversation to survive in a shared territory in the Kalahari desert. This story, of how two apex predators learned to live together in a shared world, will be used as a way of thinking afresh about how we tell more-than-human histories in a way that challenges us to take animal cultures seriously. #WildWednesday ?? This week we have a video from our partners, LittleFireFace. This footage shows the curious nature of civets. Civets are impacted by the coffee industry, as well as the destruction of their habitats. Civets however work to protect their habitats through their efficient seed dispersal that helps to maintain wide biodiversity in forests. You can learn more about civets in our free educational resources on our website, take a look: https://buff.ly/4dbs4t9 #wildwednesday #palmcivet #javanpalmcivet #littlefireface #animalwelfare #animallover #animalcharity #cameratrap #animalscience #research #animalresearch
