This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the changemakers transforming the futures of young people of Black African and Caribbean heritage. To kick things off, we’re spotlighting ACCESS UK, an organisation dedicated to addressing the critical issue of Black youth unemployment. Through its impactful initiatives, ACCESS UK is not only changing the narrative but amplifying the voices of countless young people across London, providing them with the opportunities and support needed to thrive. One of their flagship initiatives, the Operation Black Employment (OBE) programme, is tackling the urgent crisis of Black youth unemployment by helping young people access meaningful job opportunities. Although currently operating on a smaller scale, OBE has already made a significant impact, with plans to expand its reach and create even greater change across London. https://lnkd.in/eeHknUnB Another standout programme, ‘Road 2 CEO,’ equips young people who have been involved with the youth justice system with entrepreneurial skills to successfully re-enter society and launch their own businesses. We’re proud to spotlight ACCESS UK as the first organisation in our Black History Month series. Their incredible work is empowering young people to rewrite their own stories, break down barriers, and create lasting opportunities for success. ACCESS UK is leading the way toward a brighter future, one entrepreneur at a time. Nana Agyeman FRSA #BlackHistoryMonth #ReclaimingNarratives #YouthEmpowerment #ChangingTheNarrative

A New Skill has Changed My Life: A Young Black South African's Story ? As a young black South African, I've seen firsthand the struggles of unemployment and poverty. But I've also experienced the transformative power of skills development. Learning a skill has changed my life. ? Through a learnership, I acquired skills in office administration. I'm now employed and supporting my family, breaking the cycle of poverty. But it's more than just a paycheck – it's the pride and fulfilment that comes with creating something with my own hands. ? Skills development is more than just a program; it's a lifeline. It's a chance to rewrite our stories, to redefine what's possible. I'm living proof that skills can change lives. ? Let's invest in our youth, in our future. Let's give every young black South African the opportunity to discover their potential and forge a better life – a better tomorrow. ? So pleased to see the exceptional media coverage and support of the Raheem Sterling Foundation over the weekend highlighting our work with the #UniversityofManchester and #KingsCollegeLondon. The continuation of our fully-funded London and Manchester scholarship program is now in its second year. The initiative is designed to level the playing field by offering equal access to higher education, in direct response to the underrepresentation of black students from London and Greater Manchester areas who constitute just 8.5% of first-year undergraduate entrants in the UK. We are committed to alleviating financial strain, enabling young persons from under-represented backgrounds to truly maximise their talent in a chosen field. Our full-time mentorship programme also guarantees a vital support system across the 3-year terms. Guided by our #PowerOf7 strategy, we aim to inspire and support young people through education, employment, enterprise, community, creativity, leadership and social mobility Why This Initiative Matters #SocialMobility: We believe that every young person, regardless of their background, should have the chance to improve their opportunities, careers, and quality of life. Our initiatives are designed to remove obstacles and create pathways for success. #Community: From our collaboration with local schools to our international projects, we are dedicated to building safer, supportive communities. For example, our Community Kitchen at Ark Elvin Academy in Brent has brought families together, providing meals and fostering a spirit of togetherness. #Creativity: The ‘Making of Me’ project, in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, has given young people the chance to explore their creativity and develop skills for future careers in the arts. #Leadership: Through initiatives like #BrentGoesGlobal, we are equipping the next generation with leadership skills and global perspectives, preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow. #TheBoyFromBrent #SocialMobility #YouthEmpowerment #Education #Community #Creativity #Leadership #Enterprise #PowerOf7 For more details on our projects and impact, please visit https://lnkd.in/eT_eYSNz or contact me here [email protected]

As the year come to an end and reflecting on my role one of the main themes that I have seen as very important is Generational Wealth in the Black Community. As a Regional Manager of Black Customer Experience at TD Bank, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of generational wealth creation in our community. The need for building lasting financial legacies has never been more critical for Black families across Canada and beyond. For too long, systemic barriers have hindered wealth accumulation in Black communities. Many of us grew up in families where generational wealth was a foreign concept. Our parents, often newcomers to Canada, faced challenges that made it difficult to build lasting financial security. But today, we stand at a pivotal moment. We have unprecedented opportunities to create generational wealth and prepare our children to be the first generation of Black Canadians with true financial privilege. Generational wealth is more than just passing down money. It's about creating a foundation of financial stability, opportunity, and empowerment for future generations. It's crucial for: Economic Mobility Breaking Cycles of Poverty Community Impact Steps Toward Building Generational Wealth: Financial Education Homeownership Entrepreneurship Investing Estate Planning At TD, we recognize the importance of supporting Black wealth creation. We've launched initiatives like the Black Entrepreneur Credit Access Program and invested in the Black Opportunity Fund. Building generational wealth is about uplifting our entire community and creating a new legacy of financial empowerment for Black Canadians. Let's commit to open conversations about money, seeking financial education, supporting Black-owned businesses, and mentoring younger generations. The path to generational wealth creation may not be easy, but it is necessary and achievable. Together, we can build a future where financial security and opportunity are the norm for Black families across Canada. #OBFinancialAdvice #GenerationalWealth #BlackCommunities Al Ramsay (he/him/his) Clifton Flushy - MBA Paula LanzaFaith Biyapo, PMP?Christian Bassong Peter Owusu CLINT BOODRAM Latanya Monteith Housen Déborah Cherenfant Awelana AkeriweBEKH Canada

As the year comes to a close and we reflect on the impact we've made, we are excited to share the inspiring moments from the 6th You(th) Lead Conference, hosted by our community partner, the Pinball Foundation. Our partnership with PCF aligns with our Labour Market Intervention Strategy (LMIS), aimed at addressing systemic barriers and creating pathways for Black, equity-denied, and justice-involved youth to access educational and career opportunities. At the conference, our post-secondary students and alumni, through speed mentorship sessions, networked with industry leaders and executives from various sectors and industries, gaining valuable career advice and insights. It was empowering to see our current students interact with alumni, whose success stories serve as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of education and the expanded opportunities provided by #YAAACE. We’re thrilled to announce a new partnership with Blackfeet Community College (BFCC), creating pathways for students and employees to pursue fully online degrees while staying connected to their community. For WGU alum Skye Gilham, a proud member of the Blackfeet Tribe, this collaboration is deeply personal. Skye, a BFCC STEM instructor and WGU Distinguished Graduate Award recipient, uses her education to preserve Blackfeet traditions and mentor young leaders. “Education isn’t just about degrees,” Skye shared. “It’s about strengthening our community, preserving our history, and creating opportunities for the next generation.” This partnership reflects WGU’s commitment to expanding access to higher education in tribal communities while honoring their unique heritage. ?? James Chona’s post below reminded me of some lessons I had intended to share but I keep neglecting to do so. I had a similar experience to James’ daughter when the time came for me to get my National Registration Card. At the time, the queues were worse because there was only one place in the whole of Lusaka where you could get the service. I tend to be not as patient as many so my father had to keep reminding me that we needed to exercise saintly patience if we were to achieve our objectives. That was very wise fatherly wisdom but after two days of going back and forth with no success, I conjured up a business case for an alternative. The basis of my case was that time is a valuable resource and that spending a whole day, let alone two, in queues wasn’t the best use of that resource. So I argued that instead spending another day in a queue with no guarantee of success, we could instead take a day trip to Monze (the town of our heritage) where the queues weren’t as bad as Lusaka and therefore success would be guaranteed. That was enough to convince my old man and lo and behold we took that day trip and I got my card the same day. A couple of business/career lessons in this. Firstly, unbeknownst to me at the time, I was actually factoring opportunity cost in making that “business” case. Oftentimes, in the decision-making process, businesses tend to neglect this and instead only look at the direct costs when the opportunity costs in terms of loss of productivity, missed opportunities etc are higher. Granted it is not easy to identify or quantify opportunity costs but it’s a worthwhile exercise with huge benefits. Secondly, in terms of personal development, whereas it is vital to recognise your shortcomings, it is even more important to use them as opportunities to achieve your objectives. My impatience would have resulted in a negative outcome of throwing teenage tantrums but I used it to come up with a positive outcome. Not sure where I got this from but someone once said they are so lazy, that’s why they are looking for efficient ways of working.
Breaking the Cycle of Entitlement and Privilege Today, I took my daughter to get her National Registration Card. Unlike the common temptation to "cut corners" by leveraging "connections" for faster service, I chose to let her join the queue and experience the whole process like everyone else. We could have gone to a place where things move faster, but I took her to a center in Chilenje, where I grew up, to teach her two important values: humility and the importance of earning her way. In a world where it can feel easy to rely on privilege, we need to remind ourselves and the next generation that true growth comes from perseverance and patience. Character is built when we go through the same processes as others, without expecting special treatment. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." — Philippians 2:3 #Humility #GrowthMindset #Entitlement #CharacterBuilding
