Day 2 of FT Live #FutureOfTheCar is in full flow and there's been some incredible insight and amazing dialogue with leaders from Bugatti Rimac, Ayvens, BYD EUROPE, Lucid Motors, Volkswagen Group and many more. This has been a brilliant immersion back into #Automotive for me, although interestingly most OEMs & retailers seem to be experiencing the same challenges as were looming when I last worked in the industry. Lincoln has moved away from its EV ambitions, reversing plans with parent company Ford to introduce large three-row #SUV(s) to rival the Escalade IQ and potential Chevy or GMC models... Cadillac is preparing a robust EV lineup that will feature the 2025 Optiq compact CUV from #China, the existing 2024 Lyriq, the forthcoming 2026 Vistiq that accommodates three rows, and the flagship models Escalade IQ and Celestiq... It seems increasingly unlikely for Lincoln to reintroduce the Continental as a zero-emissions flagship passenger car at this time... While Cadillac might easily integrate Ultium technology into a large sedan if they expand on the Celestiq to create a standard four-door... NOTE: FMC has been following a strategy of incorporating traditional #ICE, #Hybrid, and #ElectricVechicle (#EV) powertrain platforms into its vehicles, with the realization that the customers of autos should have a whole suite of options, so those potential customers can decide what suits them best. Although the Lincoln Continental may not be reintroduced as a zero-emission vehicle (but there is no reason to rule that out), it could reappear with an ICE powertrain, and most likely with an option for a hybrid powertrain, as Ford has been in the process of giving that option for many of its new offerings...

BMW Launches Production of Fourth-Generation 1 Series at Leipzig Plant According to the BMW Group on July 1, the new fourth-generation BMW 1 Series (chassis code F70) has officially started production at the Leipzig plant in Germany and will be launched overseas on October 5. The Leipzig plant is the exclusive production site of the car, with an average daily output of 1,300 units. The new BMW 1 Series marks a new chapter in the BMW brand's nearly 20-year success story in the compact car market. The first new car to roll off the assembly line was a snow mountain white BMW 120 ordered by a German customer. Since 2007, the Leipzig plant has produced more than 1.3 million BMW 1 Series and has upgraded its system, increasing its annual output from 250,000 to 350,000. BMW expects that by the end of this year, the Leipzig plant will have about 7,000 employees. The new BMW 1 Series offers a variety of paint options, and for the first time, contrasting paint is optional, using a new overspray-free process to improve resource utilization efficiency. The successor to the legendary Mercedes G-Class is here, and it's electric. The German automaker will unveil its highly anticipated electric SUV on April 24 at the Beijing Auto Show. According to Autocar, the new electric G-Class will be called the G580 with EQ technology. Mercedes G-Class brand director Emmerich Schiller hinted that it will have different models with different performance levels, including an AMG flagship. A Luxury Workhorse That’s Not Afraid Of Any Terrain Mercedes first revealed the EQG concept at the Munich Motor Show in September 2021 and showed it again at CES 2024 in January 2024. Even before its launch, CEO Ola K?llenius personally tested the capabilities of the electric G-Class in extreme weather conditions near the Arctic Circle. Since 1979, the Mercedes G-Class has been one of the original off-roaders. Emmerich Schiller said the company didn’t want to make any compromises with the electric powertrain. “It was decided from the outset that the electric G-Class should be at least as good as the combustion-engined model, both on and off the road,” Schiller explained. Like its predecessors, the electric G-Class is designed to conquer the iconic Sch?ckl. Before going into production, the electric car will make 300 round trips on a 5.5-kilometer route to ensure it is truly ready. That’s also why it got a four-motor system, which Rivian also uses. Their goal is to give the electric car an “unrivaled combination” of off-road performance, including tank-turn capability, with the luxury and on-road refinement that customers expect from this class. The battery is also sealed to allow for wading in deep water.
