Happy International Women in Engineering Day! ???? Little story time! In school, I wanted to be in STEM and join top engineering college in India. I was fortunate to get a taste of biotechnology in school, blending technology with biology, and I loved every bit of it. I looked for admissions in engineering colleges, but biotechnology wasn't part of many good engineering courses.?Thought maybe biotech wasn't engineering!?? I had the option to pursue a theoretical Master of Science at a top college, but I chose a Master of Technology over a purely theoretical Master of Science.. because I wanted to be an engineer...????? Even if I ventured into the scientist's path, there was always an engineer in me. The hands-on, practical aspect of technology has always resonated with me. Now, after completing my PhD in biochemistry at The University of Manchester, I've come full circle, joining UCL Biochemical Engineering at UCL Engineering UCL as a Research Fellow. As a scientist-engineer, I am thrilled to engineer molecules for gene therapy and vaccine manufacturing. Meeting incredible biochem engineers in the last few weeks has been an inspiring experience! This journey reinforces my belief that the essence of engineering lies in its blend of theory and application, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Once an engineer, always an engineer. Here's to combining the best of both worlds—science and engineering—to solve real-world problems. Join the UCL Festival of Engineering (below) and check out this great free webinar on "Why do we need engineers in vaccine manufacturing?" by the amazing Stephen Morris (in comments). #WomensDayInEngineering #Biotech #VaccineDevelopment #Innovation #STEM #UCL
How can we use data to drive innovation? At the Festival of Engineering, you can discover how UCL Engineering researchers are using data engineering and analytics to create smart, sustainable cities, solve crime, monitor our health and even take us to Mars! With exhibitions, interactive demonstrations and spectacular showcases, the Festival is perfect for future engineers, families looking for a fun day out, or anyone who wants to feel inspired to look at the world differently. New content on our YouTube channel includes the first of several demos of open source web simulations from Virginia Tech that let students program adaptation of transmission parameters to maintain wireless links in challenging conditions: https://lnkd.in/eqy_U8bP. Thanks to Drs. Nicholas Polys Joseph Gaeddert, and Lance Arsenault, Don-Roberts Emenonye, and others for their contributions to the simulation development efforts! If these look interesting and/or you have suggestions, please like, comment, subscribe, etc.!

【Optics IllumiNotes】“Science should be fun! Through engaging demonstrations, interactive participation, and hands-on activities, we can spark curiosity in young minds. “ Today, let's revisit the Optics Suitcase, a project co-developed in 1999 by Dr. Stephen Jacobs and the Rochester Section of the Optical Society of America, designed to answer the intriguing question: "Where does color come from?" The Optics Suitcase introduces children to the basics of optics through games and practical experience, making it easy for even those without a science background to get involved. It includes two icebreaker games and three little baggies filled with materials to explore concepts such as diffraction, polarization, and selective reflection. As of 2018, over 1,000 Optics Suitcases have been distributed across 41 states, 66 countries, and six continents, inspiring countless young explorers. #optics #history

Universities shouldn't give much weight to grades, awards, publications, and additional qualifications when hiring assistant professors. Instead, candidates should be evaluated through teaching demonstrations to better assess their capabilities. Medals are often influenced by politics, awards can be bought, and publications can be secured with money, sometimes even a good grades secured by a student is not on her/his ability. The best way to identify the right person to teach is to see how well they perform in a classroom setting.

In August 2014 we won in an international competition the conceptual design contract for the Wisdom World gallery at the Fujian Provincial Science & Technology Museum 福建科技馆. This was followed by a design and build contract in 2017, based on that concept. The museum was officially opened to the public on November 19, 2024. Wisdom World was designed to introduce and attract children and adults to science and technology, with the primary aim of showing people how things around them work and helping to make the scientific way of approaching questions and problems more central to our culture. Wisdom World is intended to be a try-it-yourself and open-ended exhibition, where children and adults have the opportunity to discover principles of science and how things work, with 'hands-on' interactive working models, demonstrations and simple experiments. Conceptually, the exhibition starts from the observer and, particularly, the powers and limitations of human perception. The exhibition shows how familiar tools and toys of technology work, and also how they embody principles of science and technology, which are brought to bear when solving problems with the aid of human intelligence. Wisdom World is covering 3538 m2 floorspace and is featuring the main areas Exploration and Discovery, Creativity and Innovation, Issues and Impact and Open Labs.

The democratization of technology has been transforming the arts, creating agency for artists and arts organizations to reimagine how artwork is created, shared and experienced. To support artists in harnessing the power of technology, Knight Foundation first launched the Knight New Work initiative in 2018 in Miami. Today, we’re proud to announce the fifth cohort of Knight New Work grant recipients — funding 14 artists and arts organizations across Detroit, Akron and Miami. By incorporating emerging technology into their practices, these trailblazing artists and arts organizations are making important contributions to both the digital transformation of the arts and the culture of their communities. My sincere congratulations to all 2024 Knight New Work grantees! Learn more about the chosen grant recipients here: https://kf.org/KNW24.
Congratulations to our 2024 Knight New Work recipients! Since its launch in 2018, Knight New Work has celebrated digital transformation in the arts, funding artists who leverage technology to enhance their practices and explore new ways to connect people and place. Meet the 14 artists and arts organizations that have been selected from Miami, Akron and Detroit. My answer to the second question in the slide below actually sparked a great convo earlier with my colleague Tamar Keenan about how outdated the term "career ladder" is. It makes careers seem so rigid and pre-determined. We don't have to always climb up to progress. It leaves unrealistic expectations and narrows what growth actually means. What should we be saying instead of "career ladder"? Perhaps, we should be calling it "career maps" instead, since there are many different career destinations to consider and pathways to reaching them that are equally as satisfying. This also includes taking the rocket ship up to space (senior management/c-level), which is certainly a destination, but not the only way to grow. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Would love to hear your thoughts!
