The critical sectors sought under this Open Announcement include: Strategic and Critical Materials Kinetic Capabilities Energy Storage and Batteries Castings and Forgings Microelectronics Workforce Development Small Unmanned Aerial Systems Submarine Industrial Base Space Industrial Base Emerging Manufacturing Technology WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT FOR OUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS? ?? This is the first time?the DOD will accept white papers directly from organizations in the UK and Australia. ??This announcement will notably accelerate the timeline to project award by reducing the barrier to entry for foreign partners in AUKUS. This is a step in the right direction, but it will only work if executed well by acquisition officers across the US Defense Department. Here’s why… For #Defense innovators in the UK and Australia to see a true return on investment, they MUST gain traction across the US Defense sector. We are a bigger market, and wins in the US represent important precedents for other militaries to adopt newer tech. I think the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) will be integral in awarding US Defense contracts to UK and Australian companies, but… THEN WHAT?! The bulk of Defense business comes afterwards from the other acquisition professionals who have to get exceptions approved to procure anything that’s counter to the Buy American Act. Candidly, I want no American investment going to capabilities that are already ahead across these allies. I think it’s a waste of time, and time is what we don’t have. The Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Roly Walker, outlines the importance of engaging with innovative and fast moving industry partners to double the Army’s fighting power within three years. In a recent speech at the RUSI Land Warfare Conference he encouraged closer partnerships with investors and the defence technology sector to drive innovation and maintain the UK’s strategic advantage. “I want to bring academia, science, industry, and technicians – you – into our command posts, prototyping this tech craft at the edge to ensure we have a joint, and extroverted approach to doing business,” he stated. This is not only going to need a more agile approach from our traditional Defence supply chain, but the engagement of non-traditional suppliers, likely to be dominated by start-ups and SMEs, to pull through the technology required. To make this a success Defence commercial is going to have to think differently and adopt a more flexible and agile approach to procurement.
