About a year ago, we came together with providers, hospitals, advocates, and people affected by mental illness to launch Mission Zero - setting the aspiration and blueprint to ELIMINATE emergency department boarding of adults with psychiatric needs once and for all. Fueled by teamwork, creativity, and trust (oh, and a good $50 million or so in investment), we accelerated and invested in comprehensive prevention, acute care, and discharge/recovery supports. The power of that dynamic coalition and multi-faceted problem-solving is astonishing. In recent weeks, the waitlist has reached as low as three adults awaiting transfer from a private hospital emergency department to an inpatient psychiatric bed (compared to about 60 a year ago). Much more remains to be done, but today's op-ed by Commissioner Weaver captures the momentum at hand. We will continue ensure people with mental health and substance use issues are treated with dignity and given the supports they need to lead meaningful lives.?

Yesterday was CrazySocks4Docs Day! Highlighting the importance of mental health for doctors. Healthcare is 24/7, every day, nights, weekends, holidays… it never stops. We never close. Someone is always sick and needs care??. Think about that for a moment!?? Our surgery family ( our department but we consider ourselves family) play together… axe throwing, bowling, hiking as we realise the importance of taking time out and seeing each other as more than surgeons as we wear many hats! Although we try to do our very best, doctors get sick too. That’s ok. Creating a safe space within the workplace for healthcare staff to feel supported when mentally and physically vulnerable without judgement is imperative. The medical profession has one of the highest suicide rates of professions. Those who are always there for others need to be able to receive the care they require.
