Organizations that focus on the mental well-being and mental health of their workforce can improve productivity, decrease turnover and control costs; it may also make a company a more attractive workplace to prospective employees. In data shared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 81% of workers said they will be looking for workplaces in the future which support mental health. Creating a workplace that supports healthier and more engaged employees requires support on multiple levels—including training for leaders and managers to be able to support the mental health of their people. In this episode, we’re joined by Susan Minaya, M.Ed., CPTD, SHRM-SCP, the chief learning strategist and COO of Minaya Learning Global Solutions. Susan is a Certified Executive Coach and has developed a learning program for leaders, to give them the information and tools they can use to support the mental wellbeing of the people they lead. Creating a safe environment where health workers can voice concerns and share ideas is crucial in healthcare. As advocated by Amy Edmondson, psychological safety is the bedrock upon which empowerment thrives. When health workers feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to speak up about potential issues, contribute innovative solutions, and collaborate effectively within interprofessional teams. All of this can lead to better patient care, improved patient outcomes, and safer working environments for health workers. I recently had the privilege of discussing this very topic on The WCC Podcast, where we delved into the importance of psychological safety in healthcare settings (links in the comments!) Here are three ways we can cultivate cultures of psychological safety: 1?? Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication at all levels of the organization. Create platforms where health workers can share their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions without fear of retribution. 2?? Lead by Example: Leaders play a crucial role in setting the tone for psychological safety. By modeling vulnerability, actively listening to feedback, and demonstrating empathy, leaders can create a culture where authenticity and trust flourish. 3?? Continuous Improvement: Cultivating psychological safety is an ongoing process that requires continuous attention and refinement. Regularly solicit feedback from health workers and be willing to adapt policies and practices accordingly. Prioritizing psychological safety empowers our health workers and fosters a culture of excellence in patient care. Let's work together to build a healthcare environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. #PsychologicalSafety #Empowerment #Healthcare #Culture #Leadership #DiversityandInclusion #PatientCare #Teamwork
Distress comes from disempowerment, and disempowerment can lead to disengagement. How does that happen? What are the conditions that foster disempowerment??How can we reverse course and empower workers to use their voices, be heard, and enact change? Listen to the third episode of the Workplace Change Collaborative podcast, "Empowering Workers to Thrive." In this episode, Dr. Randl Dent, Ph.D. Dent, Research Scientist at the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity, explains how a culture of psychological safety can create a foundation for empowerment.?Lisa Ladendorff, LSW, rejoins to talk about how institutions can engage workers in designing changes to workflows to reduce operational inefficiencies, and ensure fair and meaningful recognition and rewards.?And Dr. Carlton Abner DNP, RN-BC, Assistant Professor and Associate Provost of Campus Health & Wellness at Kansas City University shares his work focusing on empowering healthcare students before they graduate and enter the workforce. ??
