We're diving into the defence industry ??? Fresh off the press with our JOSCAR accreditation, we wanted to explore the defence industry, starting with a micro-analysis of the UK's talent market. Despite progress, women make up only 24% of the defence workforce. Recognising the importance of diversity and inclusion, defence companies are implementing initiatives to attract and retain talent from underrepresented groups. There are some major players in the industry like Women in Defence UK, BAE Systems, Leonardo UK and many more, that are making big moves to improve the gender balance in the defence enterprise. By actively working to break down these barriers, organisations can ensure that women have equal opportunities for career advancement, mentorship, and professional development. When everyone, regardless of gender, has an equal opportunity to contribute and advance, we harness the collective intelligence and creativity of our workforce. What steps will you take to champion equality in your workplace? #wearecoex #defenceanalysis #genderdiversity

The war in #Ukraine has clearly shown that women have the same motivation as men to join the fights - They want to keep Ukraine free. However, societies still resist the idea of women being conscripted into the military due to traditional gender roles and cultural beliefs that women need to be protected and that they are the caregivers. Conscripting women promotes gender equality by affording them the same responsibilities and opportunities as men. It ensures that all citizens, regardless of their gender, contribute to the defence of the nation, fostering a sense of national unity and shared responsibility. Moreover, by including women, the military can tap into a broader pool of talent and perspectives, increasing the overall #effectiveness of the armed forces and improving its #readiness and #capability to respond to threats. Of course, there is the other side of the coin. If we want women to have the same responsibilities and opportunities as men to defend their country, we also need to ensure men have the same responsibilities as women when it comes to care activities (caring for and educating their children or grandchildren, elderly or people with disabilities, every day) and household chores. We cannot expand women`s responsibilities in defending their country and expect men`s responsibilities in the private domain will maintain the same, otherwise what we are doing is putting, again, an extra burden on women. #GenderEquality #WomenAreNATO #WeAreNATO #NATO #EqualityForAll

With initiatives like the Women In Defence UK Charter and the Women in Defence Awards, we are not just recognising female talent but actively pushing for greater inclusion across the industry. Women now make up 15% of the UK’s armed forces—a step forward, but there's more to be done. Organisations like Boeing UK are setting bold targets to reach 30% female representation by 2030. Meanwhile, trailblazers like Wing Commander Alison McLean and Rear Admiral Jude Terry OBE are breaking barriers and leading by example. From tackling the gender pay gap to offering flexible work arrangements, we’re building a defence sector where everyone can thrive. With women bringing fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and new leadership styles, it’s an exciting time for change. #WomenInDefence #Leadership #GenderEquality

With the new strategic reality in Europe and the inclusion of all Nordic countries in NATO, this brief makes a case for how leaders of Nordic defense cooperation can even more explicitly and vigilantly consider common interests on gender equality and Women, Peace and Security. These dimensions can further legitimacy and diverse voices in national and regional defense debates, enhance public awareness and engagement, enable effective mobilization, and grant insights into how to address population security implications from war. Relating Nordic efforts to NATOs policies, this brief discusses i) joint needs for integration in national and regional defense planning, ii) common challenges on the inclusion of women military personnel, and iii) how exchanges of lessons learned on integrity can strengthen efforts to improve work environments and the upholding of Codes of Conduct. A warm thank you to all who contributed to the brief - clearly an important and engaging topic. I look forward to continuing the discussion! Faced with new geopolitical challenges, new changes in the European air Denmark becomes the third country in Europe to introduce mandatory female military conscription, after Norway and Sweden, changing the current system in which women could only volunteer for military service. The Government also announced that it will extend the period of mandatory military service from four to 11 months, for both women and men. The objective, according to interlocutors, is a more robust recruitment, including full gender equality, which should contribute to solving the challenges of defense, national mobilization and the strength of our armed forces in the face of the new challenges that began after the invasion of Crimea.

?Women in some of the Scandinavian countries are already subject to mandatory military service. ?Now the Danish government plans to introduce female conscription from 2026, making it only the third European nation - alongside Norway and Sweden - to require women to serve in the armed forces. ??I remember when the war in Ukraine started, discussion on why Ukrainian men, opposed to women, are banned from crossing the boarder to escape from the conflict. These days we have to be ready for discussion on how gender equality shall look like in the context of Women, Peace and Security and in XXI it might look completely different than in 2000 when the UN resolution 1325 reaffirming the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peace-building, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction and stressing the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security was adopted. "Breaking Barriers: How Defence Forces Champion Gender Inclusivity" The Indian Defence Forces have been at the forefront of championing gender inclusivity, setting a powerful example by integrating women into roles that were once considered the exclusive domain of men. By introducing gender-neutral roles, the forces have not only shattered traditional barriers but have also underscored the importance of recognizing and nurturing the potential of women across all spheres. This progression reflects a deeper societal shift toward true equity, where merit, not gender, dictates opportunity. As we celebrate Independence Day, it's essential to reflect on the broader meaning of freedom. Independence isn't just about freedom from foreign rule; it's about fostering an environment where every individual, regardless of gender, is given the respect, opportunities, and recognition they deserve. The defence forces embraced this philosophy long ago, understanding that a nation's strength lies in the empowerment of all its citizens, especially women. By leading with this example, the forces remind us that true independence is achieved when we elevate and honor the contributions of women in every field, echoing the spirit of a nation that stands for equality and justice for all. Happy Independence Day! ????

6 个月What a fantastic post. I’m personally proud to work for not only an employer who is signed up to this charter but also for the first Trade Union to sign it too (Prospect).
