Over the past 7 weeks, we dove into Contemporary Grand Strategy with Dr. Hemmer and Dr. Palkki. The outcomes of the block helped students to:??? *Think strategically to analyze the security implications of past, present, and future operating environments and effectively communicate complex ideas. *Analyze strategic leadership and the values of the profession of arms, including sound moral judgment and character. *Assess and develop strategies and joint warfighting plans across the spectrum of conflict in pursuit of national security objectives, highlighting the role of airpower. *Evaluate the nature and character of war and conflict and the employment of military capabilities, in concert with other instruments of national power, in a joint, interagency, and coalition environment.

I want to congratulate my friend and colleague Jan K. Gleiman (Ken) and his co-authors on completing their book “Winning Without Fighting: Irregular Warfare and Strategic Competition in the 21st Century”. This book highlights the strategic importance of defending against and employing irregular warfare. While this decade has seen the re-emergence of large-scale combat, these conflicts began in the “grey zone” with irregular warfare. Detecting and deterring such activities can prevent the sorts of hybrid wars that are becoming common today. The authors of this book do well what so many military authors struggle to do: they define the changing characteristics of this style of warfare while grounding it in war's unchanging nature. https://lnkd.in/e3_ehDKt

This article articulates the problems with the firepower philosophy of war which I believe to be the predominant philosophy in U.S. military doctrine. I believe that the underlying logic of firepower philosophy is as follows: 1. There is an unacceptable level of pain or damage that the opponent can sustain 2. Delivery of destructive firepower (ordnance) in proper quantity, against center of gravity/decisive point targets, with appropriate tempo can exceed the opponent’s acceptable level of pain or damage 3. Once the acceptable level of pain or damage is exceeded then the opponent will change behavior to that which is desired 4. Success comes from destruction of the opponent’s state systems (including the will of the people) 5. Often true when one technology is perceived to be advantageous The precision paradox article explains the role of precision weapons in the firepower philosophy and the problems associated with that role.
