By utilizing vertical spaces, crops grow in a stacked, controlled environment, cutting down on pesticides and fertilizers, which makes it an environmentally sustainable alternative. This method allows for farms closer to urban centers, reducing both transport costs and emissions. With more than 68% of the world's population expected to reside in urban areas by 2050, as per the United Nations' World Urbanization Prospects: The 2018 Revision, the demand for efficient and sustainable food sources is essential. Vertical farming enables farmers to produce more food in smaller spaces—a critical factor as land resources diminish and urban populations grow. Setting up a vertical farm can be straightforward: crops are grown in tiers, and environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and light are precisely regulated. The three main techniques used in vertical farming are: Hydroponics: Plants grow in nutrient-rich water without soil. Aeroponics: Nutrient-filled mist nourishes crops, with unused water recycled back into the system. Aquaponics: Fish waste supplies plant nutrients, which in turn helps purify water for the fish. Lighting is another essential element, with artificial grow lights replacing natural sunlight to optimize plant growth. A groundbreaking study from the University of Surrey (Dr Zoe M Harris, Michael Gargaro, Richard Murphy) and the University of Aberdeen (Astley?Hastings) reveals that #verticalfarming could be just as environmentally friendly as traditional field farming. By growing lettuce on stacked shelves in high-tech greenhouses, we could save over 8,000 hectares of land in the UK alone! ?? Key Findings: - Vertical farms use 28 times less land than traditional methods. - They produced similar CO2 emissions per kilo of lettuce compared to field farming, but with much less land use. - By switching to renewable energy sources, vertical farms can significantly reduce their climate impact. ??? We hear often that vertical farming is not the solution to all problem and the environmental benefits might not be so many as many claim. Recent peer-reviewed paper by the University of Surrey and University of Aberdeen found that a vertical farmed lettuce in the UK produced the equivalent of 740g of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kilo of lettuce. This was comparable to growing in a field – but used a lot less land (28 times less). Dr Zoe M Harris also mentioned: “That could free up land to grow other crops. Vertical farms can also be built in cities, significantly reducing the impact of transporting the crop to the people who eat them. “Our study is an important first step towards demonstrating the impacts of vertical farming being greener than first thought, despite only having a limited data range available.” I think it is important to avoid greenwashing, but at the same time communicate clearly the proven benefits of #verticalfarming.
