A recent Bloomberg article emphasizes that "the downtowns of the future must remake themselves as far more than work-oriented central business districts. They must become safer and more balanced places to live, raise children, play — and especially to visit, engage in new experiences, and connect. With their central locations, well-developed transit and transport connections, and high densities of cultural and entertainment venues and amenities, they remain the very best places for this." To achieve this vision, pedestrian safety must be prioritized to encourage people to explore and walk their downtowns. One effective approach is traffic calming. Studies suggest that narrower roads create safer streets, and our Made You Look program, which employs traffic-calming strategies, has proven effective in enhancing pedestrian safety. I'm on my soapbox again! This topic resonates with me because, as a small country with limited space, we must choose between continuous expansion to accommodate automobiles in our tiny capital or reclaiming space to produce a more diverse, liveable, and sustainable urban environment. By reducing the dominance of automobiles and prioritizing people over vehicles, we can achieve a better overall quality of life. With wider sidewalks, pedestrian-only zones, and more green spaces, we can reduce the risk of accidents and pollution-related health issues and support economic vitality as foot traffic can find its way to existing stores and encourage the opening of new ones. Safe and vibrant streets attract tourists and visitors, contributing to economic growth. On the other hand, decisions such as the one made in the BVI to increase the volume and speed of traffic through the capital's streets have the opposite effect while increasing noise and danger to pedestrians. As this article shows, it is possible to reverse the impact of bad decisions, but the longer we wait, the harder it becomes. #builtenvironment #peoplefirst
