Low Effort, High Impact Incorporating dry erase sleeves for reading fluency allows Student A to provide immediate feedback, which Student B can refer to after completing their reading. This tool can be easily wiped clean, enabling repeated use in subsequent reading sessions. This method is far more engaging than merely tracking text with a finger. Additionally, the approach can be varied based on the focus of the lesson. For example, underlining phrases can be used to emphasize rhythm, while ticking off correct punctuation for awareness in enhancing expression. This is a great way to optimise germane cognitive load for explicit peer feedback. These sleeves are available for purchase on Amazon.

The current conversation regarding the so-called "reading wars" is old fashioned. When someone asks me what is the right approach to teaching their young person, I say, "I haven't met your child yet." We've to to get past simplistic responses that try to raise the floor and not the ceiling. We are all on the same team. We need a toolkit with more than one tool in it. 'We got this' if you empower teachers and bring passion and allow innate curiosity into the classroom - along with specific approaches that can assist our young people to learn intended outcomes and so much more. https://lnkd.in/g5K4UJ82

Reading is the foundation of learning. When children read, they're not just decoding words; they're building vocabulary, enhancing comprehension skills, and developing critical thinking abilities. Books introduce children to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives, fostering empathy and broadening their horizons. Moreover, reading stimulates imagination and creativity. In a world increasingly dominated by screens, books offer a unique opportunity for children to create their own mental images and narratives. This process is vital for cognitive development and problem-solving skills.

It's been a busy year. It's now the end of July. Should be a slow time for a professor who doesn't teach from mid-May to mid-August. But I can measure my slow time in hours, not days or weeks. Why? That's the dilemma I tackle in my latest blog post. I call my blog "Reflections while Carving." This post I have named "Reflections while Not Carving...." You get the gist. To read the entire blog (3 minutes) go to: https:carvedbycliff.com/blog.
