October 2023 to October 2024, the seven books I read! Hello, my dear network. I hope you're all doing great! Coming back from Nigeria in September last year, I offered myself six books as a gift. Despite my challenging schedule, I managed to read them all with a bonus. A heartfelt shoutout to my beloved sister Sarah P. SAMAKé who sent me Head above water of Buchi Emecheta. These books were about: 1. Poor dad, rich dad, Robert Kyiosaki: the difference between a liability and an asset, how to increase his income. 2. 48 laws of power, Robert Greene: to become a great personality, the different laws you should have in mind. 3. The magic of thinking big, David Schwartz : you shouldn't be afraid of your dreams, just settle down things in such a way they will become easy to accomplish. 4. The power of self-confidence, Brian Tracy: believe in yourself and develop your capacities; you'll be amazed by your accomplishments. 5. Positive thinking, Norman Vincent Peale: see the positive sides of each event in your life, and think positively about your present and future; happiness will always be there for you. 6. Head above water, Buchi Emecheta : life can be a tough journey, especially when you have the wrong partner. However, you can always correct your mistakes and take control of your destiny. 7. Take the risk, Ben Carson: Even coming into this world is a risk, so we haven't to be afraid of taking risks. With a good best and worst analysis, we can effectively choose if it is worth dealing with some issues. I know I'm really bad with book synopsis, but I read them all with special attention; it was an amazing journey I wanted to share! You can recommend other books for this year and add some comments about those I mentioned today! Let me tag book lovers of my network: Tchonté Silué, S. NIGERIA: GREEN ROADS, STONE PATHS BY ABDULMALIK YAHYA (THE PUNSMITH) Where to begin? Jagged Akure-Owo, Or Owo’s velvet-smooth roads? Either way, I’ll hold steady, Bitterness will not crown me. Nature’s sweep— Hills curl like watchful giants, Reaching for clouds, For the sky’s edge. Trees stand, Silent sentinels, Green like a quiet strength. Why do we starve In a land this rich, Where soil hums With the weight of a billion harvests? Etioro, You eclipse the Blue Moon Over a mirrored sea. Palms sway, Effortless, To the unseen hands of wind. Why these struggles? Am I trapped in half-formed dreams, Or dreaming of what should be? I long to sound the alarm— No wonder Terry G rang his bell. Akoko, We meet once more. ABC guides me to Utako, Your road silk in one breath, Stone in the next. Hills cradle your quiet, As the sun carves out Your lines in light. Oh no, Not again! The road lashes back. My bones tremble, My hand is still, Too shaken to speak. Nigeria, Sixty-four years old, Blessed from the scorch of the South To the chill of the North— A Giant in waiting, Yet still you wander. Why not climb to sixth, Or fourth, Instead of nurturing leaders Too beaten to cry? ?03-10-2024 #poetry #poetrycommunity #poemsociety #nigeria #nigerianpoets #green #badroads #writerscommunity #writers #nigeriaat64 #independence #abc

A collection of fourteen short stories that touch the heart and the ribs.... Tall Tales is a collection of short stories. The stories cover a diverse spectrum of experiences with emphasis on dark humor and exaggerations. The first three stories(Query, Jekyll and Hyde and Monthly performance review)are based on the experiences of a single character, a bank worker named Bright as he carries out his daily duties. Electric pole?details the harrowing experience of a gentleman named Ben as he goes to work one morning only to discover that he couldn't pay for his transport fare. This story highlights the bizarre ways life is lived and lost in contemporary Nigeria. Chronic hunger?is about the irony of life through the eyes of a starving 13 year old. New Money?paints a picture of a dysfunctional society that blindly lusts after wealth regardless of its source. Child Abuse?details a typical day in the life of a house girl but with a twist in the end. Sanitation day?is a satire of sorts. People have become one with filth with disastrous consequences. In?The dream, the protagonist has a vivid dream about an eccentric spinster and her mango tree. Just a little robbery?is about three boys who decide to rob a mall, only for one of them to encounter unwanted consequences. In?The lift, Crystal enters a car ride that rapidly becomes a life and death struggle When John's car broke down in an unknown terrain, the sight of one lonely house was more than welcome. However,he soon discovers that all is not as it seems in the?Half way house. Mabel's?Weight problems?are detailed to show that everything bad can get worse. Farewell Party?is set in the far future, when perfection is everything and flaws are not allowed. Because I recently read a review of Joseph Henrich’s 2020 book “The WEIRDest People in the World: How the West Became Psychologically Peculiar and Particularly Prosperous” which highlighted that in the nonWEIRD countries of Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil levels of trusting strangers were below 10% whereas in WEIRD countries levels of trusting strangers were above 50% ... the link is in the first comment.

My recommendation for the coming of age thriller El Norte by Harald Johnson The characters are well crafted and it is easy to become engaged in the story from page one. There are some heart stopping moments and also a growing admiration for Jager as he moves from being a reclusive young man into one fighting for survival. If you enjoy thrillers with great characters and surprising twists and turns along the way then I can highly recommend this book.
