Question for the brains trust that is my LinkedIn network: How do you encourage a love of giving and community service in children? Professionally interested in this for kids of all ages, all the way up to and including young adults. And personally, as a toddler Mum, especially keen to hear about any activities/conversations/books etc that are suitable for under 5s. #philanthropy #family #parenting #giving #volunteering #adviceplease

58% of the families we support are single parent families. Single parent families are at twice the risk of being in poverty and with the majority of single parents being women, it certainly tips the inequality scale. There are a multitude of complex reasons why single parents are at increased risk, with the obvious reasons of surviving on one persons salary being one of them... but challenges run deeper than this. -Unaffordable childcare -School hours restricting employment options -Reduced social network Chuck in another level of complexity with disability, caring responsibilities, social isolation after fleeing abuse and lets face it, its a pretty big mountain to climb. One mum told us the support from Little Green Sock Project was like something she'd get from a family. At Little Green Sock Project I feel like that's exactly what we've created, a family. Margaret - one of our regular volunteers, a grandmother and retired teacher comes to help us out EVERY WEEK - because she wants to help another parent feel valued and supported. Catharine - one of our regular volunteers (from ASDA) irons outgoing bundles EVERY WEEK, because she wants to make sure the families are treated with dignity and its not just a jumbled bag of clothes. Laura - One of our Trustees who volunteers her time 2 days a week (at least!) to ensure all equipment is clean and safety checked. Ayah - Who started volunteering for us a couple of months ago with her mum, has a keen eye for detail, making sure bundles have useable outfits. Dave - who helps us with deliveries of bundles to our returning families, recognising that a single parent with 3 young children can't hop on a bus and collect 6 heavy bags of items, so we try where we can to deliver to them directly. (We're looking for more delivery volunteers to join Dave!) There is one thing they all have in common. They want to ease some of the pressure on someone who is struggling. If you'd like to find out how you can help us do more, head over to www.littlegreensock.org #volunteering #stretford #familieshelpingfamilies
