???The Fear of AI Replacing Jobs: Another Reality Check I've already discussed a concern about AI taking over jobs, and pushing people to the sidelines. And in some industries, this will indeed happen. For instance, content marketing teams can be easily replaced with ChatGPT. But as discussed earlier—writing marketing pieces and Telegram posts is one thing. Making critical decisions is entirely different. I highly doubt that doctors, judges, or architects will be replaced by AI anytime soon. It may happen eventually, but not in the near future. A more likely scenario is using AI as a "second opinion." You've probably heard the advice: "If you've seen one doctor, see another to get a second opinion." It's sound advice, though not everyone follows it. However, AI could be perfect for generating that alternative perspective. A great example (one of many) is the startup Pearl, which recently raised $58 million (https://lnkd.in/eyBeXK9s). The founder noticed that dental X-rays contain a wealth of data that can train AI models—much more than other types of X-rays. Pearl combines computer vision with algorithms to scrutinize X-rays, allowing human (flesh-and-blood) doctors to make better diagnoses and offer more effective treatments. The company claims clinics using Pearl see a 30% increase in patients following their recommendations. ?? I believe AI startups like these will be one of the strongest growing segments shortly, with the clear value of augmenting people's intelligence. AI Tool Pearl Uses Computer Vision To Aid Dentists It used to be when you sit with your doctor and they go on to Google to look for an answer it felt somehow wrong, like the system was broken. But today, with the availability of LLMs and insane amounts of data, many of us are turning to the likes of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, or Perplexity for answers to "what's wrong with me?" And why not? A single human has the ability to review how many thousands of samples of example health dysfunction in their lifetime? However many images one person can see and remember, they are no match for the omni-available access AI has to millions of records. And so Dentists, Doctors, Surgeons, and other healthcare professionals are or very soon will be turning to tools like Pearl to assist with diagnosis. Interestingly Pearl originated inside GumGum, an advertising/online publishing tool. I went through a *scary* medical procedure recently and did not know enough about the condition leading up to surgery. Collaborating with AI resulted in less anxiety and made me a better patient. Maybe you can relate to being in the dark about a health scare. One of the best AI use cases is to create smart questions for your doctor. If you are like me, you research products and services before you buy them. This makes more sense for buying healthcare services. Maybe your doctor suggests a surgery or they recommend a diagnostic procedure that sounds scary. Do you get a second opinion? (always a good idea) Problem: You don't know the questions to ask your doctor or how to make a decision. Solution: - Use the correct AI tool. Many Learning Language Models (LLMs) can form an answer that may not be accurate. You've heard the concern about hallucinations. - Perplexity, the AI answer engine, scans credible online sources and answers your specific question. (example: what are the steps, risks, anesthesia, and recovery aspects of a procedure?) - You can also provide details like age group, current medical conditions, medication, concerns and more. Yes, you can generate your research question so the response is customized to you. - Before giving an answer, Perplexity reconstructs your content, which may be a run-on question into a series of well-crafted prompts.? - The answer accesses credible sources (Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, other studies) and cites the sources, enabling you to do more research. - Perplexity answers your question in multiple parts: risks, steps, concerns, questions to pose to your provider, etc. - At the bottom of every answer are 6-7 new questions. These insightful questions are the style of questions I would ask to become smarter about my healthcare. - Create your personalized question list using this research session as a reference. Results:? ?? Answers customized to me. Expansion and organization of the issues. A well-crafted list of questions that made the best use of the time with my doctor.
