No matter how many times I’ve called or emailed the city, they have never given a clear answer about their interpretation of the building code when it comes to fourplexes and the requirement of an accessible dwelling unit. It seems they have finally taken an official stance: ?? If there are common hallways or shared access points, one unit must be accessible. ?? To avoid this requirement, each unit needs to have direct street access. This decision has significant implications for the design and layout of fourplexes. Providing accessibility is noble, but it comes at a cost.
