What is our greatest advantage over our near peer adversaries? Hence preserving our nation and our way of life? Sergeant Major of the Army Mike Weimer believes it is leadership. In the military, we are inculcated with leadership education and values from day one. We are taught how to lead, and once we prove competent enough to handle the responsibility, we start small (rifle team, or a platoon). As a leadership coach and educator, all too often I see organizations put the cart before the horse. They promote people based upon their ability to do the job at the line level, task them with leading a group, but they never invest in their leadership education and training. It is never too soon, or too late, to begin your leadership journey.
The noncommissioned officer corps is the asymmetric advantage that sets the United States Army apart from our adversaries. Our NCOs lead our Army with professionalism, ensuring tasks are completed to standard. Fran Racioppi sat down with Sergeant Major of the Army Mike Weimer to discuss the definition of professional warfighting and the importance of an all-volunteer force. Mike broke down the relationship between commissioned and noncommissioned officers, balancing both art and science. He also shared how his experience in the shadows of Special Forces prepared him for the limelight of the SMA role. They also explored the future, including his vision for addressing the recruiting challenge, how warfare is evolving from the kill chain to the kill web, his plans to retain the right people, and why the integration of Special Operations and the regular Army is more important now than ever. Reduction of U.S. Army Special Operations Forces? Even as the U.S. Army makes plans to cut up to 3,000 special operations soldiers, the demand for such forces is growing around the world, the head of U.S. Special Operations Command told lawmakers a few weeks ago. Faced with a more active China, “I certainly wouldn’t support” shrinking the force, SOCOM’s Fenton told lawmakers. These decisions are mostly short-sighted and usually based off of eliminating costs, not necessarily because of future or current mission requirements. Commanders and leaders in and out of the military are not always familiar with the role special operations performs. Unit commanders don’t often get to command or coordinate special operations units within their span of control. In the last 20-year war, there was a surge of special operations forces capabilities due to the various factors involved. Today, leaders believe new technologies will replace some of the roles that SOF contributed to in the past. In our recent episode (EP-366), we discussed conventional vs special operations and how commanders often misunderstand the importance of internal cohesion and communication. The intriguing discussion probes the diverse cultures within the military and why both are essential to maintain a balanced force.
