How do you hold your software engineering teams accountable and measure their effectiveness and efficiency? Modularis’ CEO, A.J. Singh, recommends that you keep track of your ‘innovation fraction.” What fraction of your monthly R&D spend is going toward delivering innovations like new features to attract new customers vs. maintenance activities that just keep the lights on for your existing customer base? You should aim for 80% innovation and 20% maintenance to prevent attrition and drive growth. If you stop maintenance altogether, and push 100% toward next-gen, you might be thinking “Yes! Innovation!” when in reality your Golden Goose will be cooked. You’ll lose traction due to the lack of value for your current customers. Involve your engineers in these conversations so they know what they’re working toward and everyone in the value chain benefits.
