It's intriguing to see how massive protests in Spain are focusing on reducing the workweek to 37.5 hours, while the right to work from home—despite offering clear benefits in terms of time and cost savings—has taken a back seat. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many workers demanded a €20 compensation for the expenses associated with working from home. Now, as most have returned to the office, bearing the costs of commuting, fuel, and other associated expenses, there is a noticeable lack of similar protests advocating for working from home as a more viable and flexible option where possible. It's puzzling that reducing the workweek, although important, is being prioritized over working from home, which has a more immediate and direct impact on daily life quality. Teleworking not only saves commuting time but also significantly improves work-life balance—something that should be equally important in labor negotiations. Recent protests, organized by unions like CCOO and UGT, are focused on reducing work hours, while the discussion around teleworking has seemingly lost momentum in negotiations with employers and the government. Digital disconnection—another crucial aspect of work form home—has also received less media and union attention recently, despite its importance for mental health and worker well-being. At a time when labor flexibility should be a non-negotiable right, it's essential to reflect on why we are prioritizing certain labor battles over others that could have a more immediate and significant impact on our daily lives.This is the debate we need to bring back to the table: teleworking and labor flexibility as fundamental tools to improve the quality of life for workers in Spain.
