I bet you did not expect me to write a Notebook about tennis, did you? Yes, I have been following tennis for a long time now, but not as long as football though. My knowledge about tennis is limited, but as I do more and more analytical work, my analytical brain also gets better and it makes watching tennis more fun. This is my first go at writing something about tennis, using the ever-amazing detailed and publicly-available data from the Australian Open. I hope to watch more of tennis to get better and then write more about it, because I have really enjoyed watching a few recent tournaments. Pickleball's Gift to Tennis: A Resurgence of Fans As tennis enthusiasts filled the U.S. Open this year, setting a record average of over 75,000 fans each weekday, many seasoned attendees couldn’t help but feel the strain of the overcrowded grounds. For traditional tennis players, this surge in interest is bittersweet, as it coincides with the rapid rise of pickleball—a sport many view with disdain as evidenced by recent articles. Once peaceful, underutilized tennis courts, which had fallen into neglect, are now being converted into dedicated pickleball courts filled with happy people, a change that purists see as an unwelcome intrusion on their sacred spaces.
