Time certainly seems to have flown! As our image this year we have chosen a rendition of the powerful (and very unsteady) vortical structures that we believe are formed in the outwash below many eVTOL aircraft when they are operated close to the ground. The hovering twelve-rotor eVTOL aircraft that produced this pattern can just be seen at the top left of the image. Note particularly the concentration of these structures diagonally downwards to the starboard side of the aircraft - this concentration is indicative of a particularly strong jet of air out across the ground in that direction. The existence of these sorts of features in their outwash is one of the reasons why the aerodynamics of eVTOL aircraft is very different to that of most helicopters. Designers, operators, and, perhaps most of all, vertiport developers, will need to take the particular aerodynamic characteristics of this new class of vehicles firmly to heart when considering how safe their operations will turn out to be in practice.
As we celebrate our 9th birthday, Sophrodyne Aerospace reflects on a year of real progress and discovery. A heart-felt thank you to all our supporters, friends and colleagues for the hours spent discussing, debating and learning with us.

One of those nights when you feel like you've got a front row seat to something big... What an incredible honor to join ???? Argentina President Javier Milei and this group of AI leaders and luminaries for dinner. More convinced than ever that AI can play an outsized role not just in technological innovation, but also in economic development for countries who embrace the potential of this revolution. Thank you Mat Travizano and Stan Chudnovsky for the invitation! We expect huge disruption coming from AI in the CX industry, and it's been central to our product roadmap and engagement with startups and customers over the last 18 months in particular at Zendesk. As business leaders, it's not only our job to build and deploy these technologies with our customers, but we should also engage the broader ecosystem to ensure that the benefit reaches many. Let's keep pushing the frontier! #ai #cx #customerexperience #zendeskforstartups #vamosargentina
Thrilled to have hosted President Milei’s dinner with some of the brightest minds in AI ?????? Argentina cannot miss AI. I hope these events contribute to an informed and honest conversation – hopefully bipartisan – on how to harness AI’s potential for the country’s growth and innovation. A big thank you to all the participants for their valuable insights and contributions, and a special thanks to my friend Stan Chudnovsky for co-hosting this event with me. For more to come! The Wrights pioneered user-centered design by focusing on the control systems in order to support piloting as an essential function of flying. Others like Langley fixated on wings and motors, without due consideration to the role of the human in piloting the aircraft.
TODAY IN HISTORY... Wilbur and Orville Wright made aviation history with the first manned, powered flight of the "Wright Flyer" in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina ?? The first flight lasted for 12 seconds and went 120 feet.

Empirically guided insight from bicycles: you don’t have to develop an inherently stable platform. You just need to develop a #stabilizable system. And that doesn’t require comprehensive observability and controllability because the best #nonlinear systems have a subset states that take care of themselves. It’s fascinating to see the various air frames that the Wright Brothers #experimented with (e.g., at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton). The full-scale physical air frames reveal their thought process behind #iterative design of the control system for detectability and stabilizability. The #mathematics of the resulting aerodynamics followed, and the #intelligibility of the adaptive control system is as difficult as many computational solutions involving artificial intelligence.

#Innovation #History Stirrup #AI The introduction of the stirrup to horseback riding is a prime example of how a seemingly minor innovation can have a profound impact on history. Providing riders with greater stability and control, stirrups revolutionized cavalry tactics and warfare. This development led to the rise of heavy cavalry and the formation of knightly orders, shaping the social and military fabric of medieval Europe. The stirrup’s influence extended beyond the battlefield, contributing to the feudal system and the ascent of a warrior nobility. Culturally, it inspired the chivalric ideals that permeated medieval literature and art. This small but mighty invention exemplifies how technology can drive transformative change across multiple facets of society. #Cavalry #MedievalTimes #TechnologicalImpact

The EW-resilient, Black Widow? (made by Red Cat) will be the U.S. Army’s program of record sUAS for Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR). The rucksack-portable quadcopter, which leverages AES-256 encryption, was specifically designed for electronic warfare (EW) environments, including GPS-denied navigation. The "secret sauce", however, appears to be in an on-board Helix?Nano Mesh Rider [radio] datalink, paired with an anti-jamming capability known as "Sense." Both of these capabilities were made by the U.S.-based, Doodle Labs. Launched in 2008, Doodle Labs built most of their proprietary frequency-shifting capabilities under the sponsorship of the DIU, while also partnering with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and NASA. Some specs on the Black Window: Weight: 3.6 lbs (1.63 kg) Flight Time: 35+ minutes Speed: 23 mph Range: 5 miles (8 km) Some other cool features: ? Integrated FLIR Prism AI Software Stack ? Integrated Reveal Farsight 3D-Mapping ? Athena AI Target ID, Tracking & Classification ? Modular Arms for Primary / Secondary Payloads ? Visual-odometry w/Visual Navigation Capability ? Qualcomm RB5 Chip for AI Capabilities With just one Black Widow costing in the low 5-figures, I would expect this sort of technology to become widely feasible for the commercial drone market in the coming years. https://lnkd.in/dzeRGEbq
