"My work is animated by two big questions: first, how do Latinx folks start to be understood as a group within the American racial hierarchy while encompassing so many nationalities and histories; and second, what is the role of performance, culture, and representation in dictating how Latinxs are understood racially? I focus on the nineteenth century because it was a time when the American empire was expanding rapidly into Latin America and the Caribbean, and the idea of what a Latinx person was or could be was just taking form. I make the case that performance and theater during this period are crucial to how we understand Latinx identity today." Christofer Rodelo is an assistant professor of Chicano/Latino studies at UC Irvine who uses they/them pronouns. They discuss their work on the role of performance in building Latinx identity in the United States, their journey from public school student to professor, and how the resources of Harvard University's archives made their PhD work possible. https://buff.ly/3xe1no4

How do we live together in a diverse society, especially one that is divided by intractable issues? It cannot be done without tolerance. But pluralism is more than mere tolerance. It reflects a willingness to engage and understand. The following one-minute video reflects a simple way to embody a pluralist approach in our difficult conversations. It should be clear from the video that pluralism does not mean settling for some fuzzy middle ground that obfuscates differences. “It is a peculiar sensation, this double consciousness… one ever feels his two-ness, an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two un-reconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder” W.E.B. Dubois, The Souls of Black Folk As a Black reputation management professional, this is reality. Some would argue that the path to authenticity includes merging the two perspectives together, but there’s still a line to be aware of. Organizations taking space during heritage moments must employ a strategy and approach that walks the line of authenticity carefully to avoid falling into disingenuous performance or appropriation. Having diverse voices at the table that will push you on intention and perception will take your program and campaign to another level that cannot be reached with data and academic insight alone. #blackhistorymonth #bhm #diversity #blackprofessionals

As Black women, we have experienced the trauma of our intellect, leadership, and person being constantly challenged and erased. Let's call it what it is: Misogynoir. Misogynoir, as coined by Dr. Moya Bailey, is defined as the ways anti-Black and misogynistic representation shape broader ideas about Black women, particularly in visual culture and digital spaces. ???? The negative impact of misogynoir across all sectors, not just digital media, has continued to be detrimental to the livelihood of Black women. ???? In public and medical health, this concept is crucial as it underscores the need to address not only the physical health disparities that Black women face but also the mental and emotional toll of misogynoir. ??
