I am seeking highly motivated Ph.D. students to join my research group in?Fall 2025?with full funding support. Ideal candidates should possess a strong background in AI/ML, optimization, stochastic processes, and a passion for addressing practical challenges in next-generation networking, including quantum networking, security, and human brain-interface systems. Working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team is essential. Eligibility Criteria: A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated research potential will also be considered. Proven experience in AI/ML, optimization techniques, or stochastic processes, supported by prior publications in reputable journals or conferences. A strong interest in next-generation networking topics, such as 6G wireless systems, quantum networking, or human brain-interface technologies. Like many questions, the answer to this question is highly situational and depends on your training background + experiences and your desired future path. Postdocs do give you the opportunity to gain greater breadth of training, but those additional years may not be a key differentiator. Many organizations see postdoctoral experiences as extensions of academic training as opposed to having bonafide ‘work experience.’ If they were comparing two candidates, comparable degree training, one with 2-3 years in biotech/industry post PhD versus 2-3 years of post-doc, industry experience is usually preferred. Some teams still prefer to see postdoc experience in their hires, especially in laboratory focused groups and teams looking for greater depth in given areas. Personally, I have found it easier in some ways to bring new PhDs into the workforce, train them and build on their fundamental skills as they focus on their new roles. It is not an either/or. Focus on talent and consider their long-term potential. Admittedly I have a particular perspective here, but it is one informed by decades of experience and being involved in hiring and developing many scientists. If you are intending to move away from the bench coming out of school – don’t bother doing a postdoc. Not required, not needed and you lose valuable years when you could be starting your post academic journey. There are some exceptions to the points above. Perhaps you are in a situation where your PhD experience was not the strongest for any number of reasons. The postdoc could bolster your skills and make you more competitive in the marketplace. It may also buy you valuable time during difficult hiring environments. It can be easier to move to a different country in an academic versus business context. Industry postdocs can be a valuable opportunity to get your foot in the door and impress the team. This does count as 'industry experience' in many cases. You also get a much better sense of whether that team/organization is the right fit for you. Some companies use their postdoc programs as talent development pipelines. Of course there are some organizations who provide disclaimers that they don't hire their postdocs. Let me be clear. If they like the talent, they hire them regardless of the policy. It could also give you more flexibility if you are choosing to diversify your skillset. In my case, my postdoc broadened me beyond my chemistry roots. Though in fairness, I did a postdoc due to personal interest and choice as opposed to viewing it as a requirement. I've been hearing this kind of alarmism since I was in high school and wanted to pursue a career in biology and, honestly, it makes me sick?? DO NOT PURSUE YOUR DREAMS, I REPEAT, DO NOT PURSUE YOUR DREAMS! SOMETHING TRAGIC WILL HAPPEN TO YOU IF YOU DO!!?????????????? - When I was in high school they told me that if I majored in biology my only career choice would be teaching or research, and that I would be poor in both cases. + Reality: only 2/60 of my uni classmates are teaching in high school, and they seem to be doing really well. The rest found jobs in all kinds of different fields: clinics, research, industry, sci comm... - When I was in uni they told me that I needed a GPA of 9/10 or more to do a PhD in my country, or otherwise I would have to emigrate. + Reality: I could do a PhD with a GPA of 8.3/10 fully funded by the Spanish ministry. Some of my friends have done the same with GPA of 7/10, and in general GPA has been a very poor predictor of PhD success. - When I was in my master's they told that I should go to industry right away. They told me that I would be "hyperspecialized" if I pursued a PhD and I'd have a hard time finding a job in a biotech or pharma. + Reality: most pharmas value PhDs above any other degree. A PhD teaches you project management, scientific writing, team work, time management, oral communication, etc, skills highly valued by any employer. On top of that, chances are that the specific skills that you learn in your PhD are easily transferable to an industry setting: bioinfo, genomics, pharmacology... - When I finally did my PhD everyone told me that a postdoc would be a waste of time, with similar arguments to all the points above. + Reality: a postdoc has been so far one of the most enriching experiences of my life: got to live in another country, met people from virtually every country and learnt a lot from their cultures. Science-wise I'm doing some of the most ambitious projects I ever dreamed of. And YES, I've been under a lot of stress at different periods of my career. I would probably be richer if I went into finance instead of biology. But guess what: I would do it all over again. This is purely my opinion, but biology is one of the safest careers of our time, and thus you should not play it safe. That's not to say that you shouldn't listen to this kind of advice, please do. Ultimately, however, your life is YOURS and nobody elses. Let fear not be a factor of what you want to do!
Why postdoc doesn't make sense for industry? Because: 1. You compete against applicants with industry experience. And this ‘relevant experience’ is HUGELY important for most roles. 2. You become overqualified for entry positions in 95% of cases. Even a PhD is considered an ‘overqualification’ for positions expecting BS/MS graduates. 3. Higher-level positions are normally NOT available to those without industry experience. Coming from academia, it’s really hard to secure a managerial position in the corporate world. 4. Your postdoc skills often merely ‘extend’ your PhD experience. But who cares about those ‘extended skills’ in industry? Most recruiters will dismiss your application after seeing you did a postdoc in academia. ??A postdoc makes sense WHEN: 0. You want to stay in academia. 1. Your personal situation requires it (immigration, family, etc). 2. You want to make a startup based on your postdoc experience. 3. Your postdoc is in partnership with industry. 4. You want to get hands-on experience in applied fields (while coming from fundamental research) and cannot find an industry role. ?? So… Yes, there are exceptions. Yes, some postdocs find excellent positions. But this is not typical! The hiring system does not favor such cases. If you plan to join industry, apply BEFORE you start looking for a postdoc. Get a counter-offer from industry. Compare it with your postdoc offer. Then decide. #PhD #research #postdoc
