??? For the first time since 1960, both Army West Point Athletic Association Inc. and United States Naval Academy football are ranked in the AP Poll! This unique moment in college football history is a testament to the long-standing connection between the military and the game, showcased by the Service Academy programs being represented in our Aflac Military and Football Exhibit. We have spent decades preserving this rich legacy, from iconic Army-Navy rivalries to honoring the athletes who have served, and take great pride in celebrating the deep ties between college football and the military, where patriotism and sport unite.

The history and traditions of the Academies are unlike any other. Here's a few examples. The Academies have produced 3 U.S. Presidents, tied with Harvard and Yale for the most. Whoa. West Point produced 445 generals, just for the Civil War alone. Of the 4-star Admirals, the Naval Academy produced 90% of them. When you visit the Academies, you'll understand. It's American history. It is excellence. That's why there were roughly 40,000+ Academy applications. 40,000! And yet only approx. 5,000 were offered appointments. So how does this help YOU, the applicant? Go visit, and it will fuel you to put every ounce of effort into your application. Because you'll need the motivation when the going gets tough. It'll require all of you.

Learn more about General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. and the Davis Barracks here!
This week we continue our #BlackHistoryMonth series, shedding light on individuals and projects that hold significance in Black history and have left a lasting impact on our firm, industry, and society. One such project is the General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Barracks at the United States Military Academy at West Point, designed by Clark Nexsen and named after the first African-American general in the U.S. Air Force. ? The extensive excavation and preparation of the barracks site paled in comparison to the challenges General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. faced throughout his military education and career. During his time at West Point, he endured isolation and discrimination, being shunned and spoken to only for official reasons. Moreover, he was denied flight training in the Army Air Corps due to its refusal to accept African Americans.? ? The challenges overcome by General Davis Jr. are highlighted by his graduation as the 36th cadet in his West Point class of 276 in 1932 and?graduating from aviation cadet training in 1942 after the War Department created an all-black flying unit.?His journey continued as he led the Tuskegee Airmen Fighter Squadron during World War II, ultimately reaching the historic milestone of becoming the first African-American general in the U.S. Air Force. The General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Barracks stands not only as a testament to groundbreaking achievements but also as a symbol of its namesake’s extraordinary vision and perseverance. ? Talk about a long hard journey to reach the upper levels of personal success ????
Colin Powell was born in Harlem, a son of Jamaican immigrants, and grew up in the Bronx. He attended The City College of New York and entered military service as an ROTC cadet. He rose through the ranks of U.S. Army to become the 1st Black officer to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He would later serve as the 1st Black Secretary of State. After he passed last year, veterans remembered his career: https://n.pr/3rA2CIY #BlackHistoryMonth

A really good long form article (with data) illustrating the tension at Service academies between the need for diverse perspectives in their officer corps and systems that often disadvantage the diverse individuals. While this tension is seen in the experiences of the socio-economically diverse and prior enlisted (both apply to me), it is most acute for racial diversity because it is an ever-visible part of a students identity. The academy prep schools like the United States Military Academy Preparatory School provide immense value by improving the access to and success of these more of these diverse populations. However, the core quantitative “meritocracy” of the academies present inherent challenges evidenced by the data in this article. The article sums up the challenges of quantifying every aspect of “merit” for officer candidates: “Owens has expressed concern that cadets are too often treated as numbers: their GPA or class rankings that determine who gets coveted assignments such as a place in flight school…But I've been talked down to more because of my class rank than because I'm a Black man." Saw this in an email this morning. Fascinating. Human Factors in Combat: A groundbreaking course at the Naval Academy ?As future officers of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps prepare to face the complexities of modern warfare, a unique course at the U.S. Naval Academy is helping midshipmen address one of the most critical yet overlooked aspects of combat — the human element. The Human Factors in Combat course, now in its second semester, explores the physical, psychological, and emotional challenges faced by service members in combat environments. The course is designed to equip midshipmen with the tools needed to lead effectively in the most stressful of circumstances. Capt. Andrew Ledford, a professor at the Naval Academy and the lead instructor for the course, highlighted its importance in shaping future leaders. ”It's the human factors piece that is really, really difficult to discuss,” Ledford said. “But it's really, really important.” (usna.edu) Rafael Matos, Ph.D.

The Calvert Task Group’s mission is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, the Navy and Marine Corps and the United States Naval Academy. We affirm the Navy’s traditional values of honor, courage and commitment and that are now under threat. We represent mostly Annapolis graduates, almost all of whom are current, former, or retired naval officers representing countless of years of Naval service. We reject the dangerous politicization of our armed forces. We believe our military must be a meritocracy and eliminate the influence of divisive ideologies and identity politics. We are current, former, or retired naval officers representing thousands of years of Naval service. We affirm the Navy’s traditional values of honor, courage and commitment and we believe those are under threat. We have observed with increasing alarm the dangerous politicization of our armed forces through the promotion of the divisive ideology of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. While sounding good, right, and politically correct, these carefully selected words are deceptive and destructive in nature when applied to social constructs that demand merit-based selection and exceptional leadership in potential life and death situations. We believe in equal opportunity and in merit advancement. These two factors are critical to unit cohesion, morale, and effectiveness. We believe the military, above all other walks of life, must operate under those principles. The Calvert Task Group was formed in 2021 as an association of U.S. Naval Academy alumni, led by members of the class of 1969. Our members believe that American Service Academies are exceptional institutions for developing future leaders prepared to assume the highest responsibilities of command citizenship and government. Our class motto – “Non Sibi” or “Not Self” – appears in the crest inscribed on our class rings and is a common bond that has molded our lives for more than half a century. We understand that if we are not part of the solution, we are part of the problem. We are committed. We are open to all Naval Academy graduates and also welcome others who agree with and are willing to support our cause. The Calvert Task Group (CTG) represents veterans and service academy alumni, most of whom are combat experienced. We have personally witnessed the unique, “color and gender blind” culture of our fellow warriors, necessary to prevail on the battlefield.
