We've recently completed work on a key project at London Gatwick Airport - a new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET). Now in use, the RET helps reduce delays and supports sustainability goals - including limiting carbon and noise emissions. Despite a Covid-19 pause, by working with the airport and other partners we were able to optimize the redesign. This cut carbon emissions by over 10%—equivalent to driving 1.3 million miles! This week, our focus is on Belfast, where Urban Air Mobility services could significantly enhance local sustainability and economic growth. With the potential for five #UAM routes, the system may require up to 24 aircraft, indicating there are some dense routes. Notably, these services could inject £3.6 million annually into the local economy by saving significant travel time — equivalent to returning 46 years worth of time to commuters. We note that a remarkable 95% of these routes are currently dominated by car journeys. While our calculations are still preliminary, by developing eVTOL services, Belfast has the potential to eliminate 195,000 car journeys each year, which would cut annual carbon emissions from vehicles by 2,250 tonnes. This shift not only supports environmental goals but also bolsters economic benefits for the city. Heathrow's third runway is once again taking centre stage for #aviation #infrastructure in the #UK. An announcement by Rt Hon Rachel Reeves is due today and the debate spans two main opposing camps - the #economic benefit, and the #environmental considerations (whether they be climate change, noise, or impact to local communities). Typically I am concerned about the impacts to #sustainable aviation, but buoyed by the phenomenal progress Heathrow is making on the use of #SAF above the 2% requirement of the SAF mandate, I also see the positives. One should reasonably expect that should this project be given the go-ahead, it does so with #sustainability strings attached. Ultimately if the government's central agenda item here is for investment and economic growth, then why not eek out one project with multiple investment and economic opportunities, especially if they also help address aviation's impact to the climate. Alternatives also include additional runways at London Gatwick or London Luton Airport - if they were to be announced as alternatives for another runway, then the impact to the planet/climate change still exists. More flying means humanity ought to be advancing the sustainability agenda more than ever. All in all, an interesting topic of debate and one with many synergies to the type of solution CirculAIRity is presenting. Lets see!

Airports in the UK are experiencing increased traffic and passenger volumes, with Heathrow Airport being a prime example where approximately 200,000 cars traverse the airport roads annually. Among these, around 150,000 vehicles are involved in passenger pick-ups and drop-offs at the operational terminals. Currently, the Airport imposes charges on drivers for these services. Consider the innovative idea of implementing ViaGen Light Energy systems at the main entry and exit barriers, alongside the long and short-term car parks. This system harnesses the energy generated by vehicle movement to produce clean electricity. This sustainable approach could power various aspects of the airport's infrastructure or be stored in battery packs for electric vehicle charging stations, offering a greener solution for energy needs. UK Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has expressed strong government support for airport expansion in the United Kingdom, including a third runway at Heathrow, provided developments align with legally binding carbon targets. Speaking at the Airlines 24 conference in London, Haigh highlighted aviation's critical role in economic growth and pledged to back projects that balance expansion with environmental commitments. ?? A series on #Airports & #Sustainability (3/n) ‘Airport Carbon Accreditation’ programme was incorporated in 2009, and it started with 17 leading airports, it has 571 participating airports today. Out of these 571 airports globally, only 14, less than ~3% are accredited to the highest level 5. Level 1 & 2 combined has 342 accredited airports. Which means, majority of the accredited airports (~60%) have not reached level 3. What could be the reasons for such low numbers beyond Level 3? Possible challenges: 1) Cost-benefit: Airports are unable to justify additional cost for accreditation. 2)?Lack of incentive: There are no tangible incentives for airports to achieve these milestones. 3)?Enterprise maturity: Accreditation to level 3 and beyond demands strategic interventions to optimize emission and procure carbon credits. Many airports lack the DNA to bring about major operational changes, for ex. not every airport can install PV solar and move away from fossil fuel. 4)?Collaboration: Alignment with stakeholders beyond level 3 is critical. Airports find it difficult to influence their partners towards a common goal. These partners include #airlines, #groundhandlers, #MRO, #CargoTerminalOperator, #IFK, other vendors and suppliers. What can airports do? 1) #Technology: It can help airport transform in becoming a connected enterprise. A connected airport will measure emission on a real-time basis and gain visibility on third-parties as well. 2)?#StrategicSourcing: It is extremely important for an airport to align their partners; and in most cases this means incorporating necessary obligations in the contract. 3)?#AlternateInvestments: Certain emissions are difficult to curtail, or commercially unviable, even with technology and collaboration with third party stakeholders. Investment in recognized carbon offset projects is recommended. 4)?Motivation: Reasons for any airport to embark on carbon management journey can be – alignment with region or country’s net zero ambition, to attract lenders and equity investors, association and demonstration of equal contribution towards environment sustainability along with global peers, Corporate Social Responsibility, long term cost optimization when fossil fuel or traditional energy sources are expensive.

What are the chances that a second runway at Gatwick are included in the UK Gov announcement expected Wednesday? I had not realised that Gatwick is nearly 18-months into a planning process which was due for a decision anyway or that building of a second runway is so ‘relatively’ straightforward. I must confess, I was unaware the airport has a second runway already! Perhaps it is the profile adopted by Gatwick of being the busiest ‘single’ runway airport in Europe, that had previously masked the detail, but Gatwick already has a second runway: parallel to the main runway but too close to allow dual operation. ‘Relatively’ straightforward means moving it ‘just’ 12 metres North and widening it to create the separation necessary. Without needing to take extra land from outside the perimeter. Some new roads and development may be required but honestly Gatwick is such mess already that any improvement in the access will be a good thing. Little surprise that local MP’s are against the plan and want to delay it, but It does feel to me that the UK Gov current need for growth, is about to eclipse everything! Corporate clients and travel companies who may not yet have established their position on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), still have today and tomorrow to get ahead of the announcement and be ready to respond.

Melbourne Airport’s third runway to keep Victoria flying Melbourne Airport has welcomed the Federal Government’s approval of its third runway, which will deliver much needed aviation infrastructure capacity for Victoria and help support thousands of new jobs. The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government approved the Major Development Plan for the project, which paves the way for detailed design and construction to start. The approval follows a lengthy community consultation period and robust assessment of the project’s environmental and social impacts. The 3,000-metre-long runway will be built parallel and 1.3 kilometres to the west of the existing north-south runway, along with new taxiways and other enabling infrastructure. When it opens in 2031, the parallel runway system will significantly increase Melbourne Airport’s capacity by allowing for simultaneous take-offs and landings, which will help reduce delays and give existing airlines and new entrants the infrastructure they need to grow..... https://bit.ly/3XnvF18 Lorie Argus Melbourne Airport #Australia #Aviation #Airports
