A McKinsey & Company survey from earlier this year shows that good connectivity options are driving car purchase decisions across all regions, with higher uptake in mainland China and with younger drivers (not surprising as both populations are digital-savvy if it entirely digital natives.) When it comes to subscription models, the survey showed customers liked them: ?? Bundled as an offering (though don't recreate the old cable TV model!) ?? Billed annually, not monthly ?? Tailored to their region Automotive OEMs can expect a 40-60% uptake rate for a good connected services offering, and this number rises among EV buyers. According to Berg Insight 75% of all cars sold last year were shipped with OEM telematics devices embedded. While it may seem that expansion of OEM built-in telematics would lead to significant displacement of aftermarket telematics growth, last decade showed that both have been growing in tandem. The S&P Global Mobility 2024 Connected Car Consumer Survey asked nearly 8,000 consumers globally about connected-vehicle services to understand how those consumers viewed connected vehicle features and to assess their willingness to pay for these services and features. The biggest thing they wanted was "enhanced navigation" - which might mean finding a gas station or EV charger at the right time, or understanding what the cost of parking or tolls to my destination might be. Real-time precise location, cloud-based activation and an embedded digital wallet in the car -- all accessed and activated via one touch of the car infotainment screen -- will enable this.
