We live in a data driven world where data can often be used to support a particular story depending on the objectives that is being achieved. We've been using the gold medal weighted ranking since forever but should status quo be challenged to allow equal weighted placed upon other medals? No doubt all medals are hard to achieve but should we deprioritise the achievement of non-gold medal athletes in its current calculation methodology? Neither is wrong or right, but importantly, measure needs to be constant to avoid inconsistencies in the definition of success.

? ? ? ?? 2024 ?? ???? The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics will take place on July 26th, not even time to get there and the first decision of the CAS AD HOC DIVISION (CAS OG 2024/01) has already been issued. The protagonists of the decision were the Jamaican athlete Nakoya Clunis, hammer throw specialist, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) and... Hurricane Beryl. Can adverse weather affect the fate of an Olympic athlete? It seems so. What can the CAS do about it? Nothing for now. Jokes aside, it seems that the athlete in question, selected for the Paris Olympics by her sports federation, was added to the appropriate list, but after the deadline. All this due to an unlucky omission. As far as I was able to find online, from the same statements released to the media by the top leaders of the JAAA, the omission in question was caused by the mere lack of electricity and consequently the lack of access to the internet due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl , precisely in conjunction with the deadline for formalizing the athlete's participation in the Olympics. Nakoya Clunis then filed an appeal with the CAS AD HOC DIVISION, which, having heard the parties at the hearing on 22 July, issued an ad hoc press release by which it declared that it could not enter into the merits due to lack of jurisdiction. In fact, the CAS AD HOC DIVISION has jurisdiction only for "any disputes covered by Rule 61 of the Olympic Charter, as far as they arise during the Olympic Games or during a period of ten days preceding the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games" (art .1, Arbitration Rules applicable to the CAS ad hoc division for the Olympic Games). The news is still fragmentary, but it seems that the appeal was filed by the athlete outside the deadline represented above (10 days before the inauguration ceremony). Result: no jurisdiction of the CAS AD HOC DIVISION, no decision on the merits. Let's hope they will publish the decision.

Imagine you have two events, A and B, occurring in a vast universe of possibilities. In this universe, the occurrence of A doesn't sway the likelihood of B happening and vice versa. This lack of influence defines the independence between these events. Thus, in the dance of probabilities, A and B move to their own rhythms, untouched by the steps of the other. This harmony is the essence of independent events, creating a symphony of certainty in the realm of chance.Consider the Semi-Finals of Euro 2024: if France wins the 1st Semifinal, it doesn’t mean the Netherlands will win the 2nd Semifinal, nor does Spain’s win in the 1st Semifinal imply England will win the 2nd Semifinal. Two semifinals are independent if the outcome of one doesn’t affect the outcome of the other.More precisely, if there are two candidates in an election, and if Q loses, then P must win, and if Q wins, then P is considered lost. This scenario is not an example of independent probability. In essence, true independence means each event unfolds its own story, unaffected by the tale of the other, weaving a tapestry of probability that is both intricate and beautifully unpredictable.

The World's Strongest Man Competition 2024 - A missed opportunity for my guilty pleasure! Every Christmas I watch this competition. It was something that I watched avidly with my son when he was at home. The other day my son sent me this text and said "Dad this could be a post for you?" the following well written comment are his words! Why does the world's strongest man competition, in 2024 release their footage 6 months later than the actual event itself? It's crazy that no organisation has capitalised on any type of live streaming or pay per view deal for this. We no longer live in a world where you can avoid the news even if you don't read the papers and essentially the organisers remove any excitement for anyone that wants to watch the event 6 months later. Imagine if the World Cup final was not available to watch until 6 months after it was played. That's what we have here with The Worlds Strongest Man competition. There are certainly difficulties regarding the event as there can be extensive breaks over multiple days, but these are minor hurdles that any respected tournament organiser or promoter could overcome! This basically robs the audience of witnessing record breaking history as it happens, it steals from the athletes any potential sponsorship money and even the organisers miss out on potential revenue streams that may help increase the popularity of this competition. Credit to Luke Winterburn - his thoughts not mine.
