Not one but TWO pieces of excellent recent news regarding Isambard Kingdom Brunel for you today! ?
The Old Station in Cirencester, a Grade II listed building designed by Brunel, is set to undergo a significant renovation. Opened in 1841 and transferred to the local council’s ownership in 1968, this former station has been disused for several years, falling into a state of disrepair. However, plans are now in place to restore this historic structure, breathing new life into Brunel's architectural masterpiece.
Another exciting development is the restoration of the impressive Brunel Manor, a long-awaited home that Brunel actually never saw completed. Located on the outskirts of Torquay, Brunel intended to retire to this house. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1859 before the house and its gardens were finished. The land was sold to new owners who constructed Brunel Manor on the original foundations. Over time, the property fell into disrepair and suffered from vandalism. Now, a new plan to transform Brunel Manor into new homes has received approval.
Brunel's impact on engineering and public transport is profound. From building dockyards and the Great Western Railway to designing revolutionary steamships like the SS Great Britain, Brunel's innovations have stood the test of time and he's one of my favourite and inspiring characters to write about.
