I have been working out for 13+ years. Along the way, I have done all sorts of things to try to get better: 1) Read cover to cover Clinical Sports Nutrition 2) Studied for Bachelors in Nutrition in Kansas State University (to become a Registered Dietitian) 3) Trained 3 years under a National Weightlifting Champion And all of these things helped me a ton. But if I had to start all over again (as a beginner), this is the simple framework I wish I had for learning how to {Skill}: Step 1: Build Your Roadmap You can't run if you don't know where you're running to. Step 2: Build Your Base Build the foundations to help you achieve your goals (daily, weekly and monthly schedule) Step 3: Build Your Muscle When you build your roadmap and your base, the only thing is left is executing and building your muscle on EASY MODE. Attending the Food is Medicine Summit at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Food Revolution Network was truly an honor! In a room buzzing with passionate individuals dedicated to transforming the food system, the energy was palpable. Here are 10 key insights from the speakers on reshaping our food landscape: 1. Prioritize daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains by making them accessible and central to meals. 2. Ensure access to healthy produce aligns with cultural preferences and traditions. 3. Tailor interventions to communities' unique needs, preserving cultural practices with local, whole foods. 4. Advocate for healthier options in institutions like hospitals and schools. 5. Support local farmers and promote local food systems for health and sustainability. 6. Foster community engagement through partnerships with farmers, healthcare providers, and local businesses. 7. Empower kids by involving them in food education programs that connect them with farmers and teach kitchen skills. 8. Embrace food sovereignty by growing your own food or participating in community gardens. 9. Offer food choices that bring joy and vitality to individuals and communities. 10. Increase plant-based protein options in institutional settings. (this was my own addition ;)) Eye-opening and thought-provoking insights from the summit included: ?? Reconsidering societal norms to promote better health for future generations. ??Addressing the disparity between healthcare spending and life expectancy in the US. (US has lowest life expectancy in the world yet the highest spending on healthcare.) ??Knowing that 70% of population still trust their doctors for nutrition information when doctors only get approximately 18 hours of nutrition education in traditional medical training.?(Thankfully there are many incredible doctors now practicing lifestyle medicine! Hopefully more on the rise ...) ??Understanding that poor diet is the leading risk factor for mortality in the US. ?? Highlighting the role of food in fostering joy and connection. The FRESHFARM FoodPrints curriculum, which has positively impacted kids' confidence in the kitchen and curiosity around food, was incredibly inspiring. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Members - please complete the latest action alert to OPPOSE the current House version of the Farm Bill. HR 8467 proposes eliminating future Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) adjustments which is estimated to cut SNAP benefits by $30 billion over the next decade. With food insecurity rates on the rise in recent years now is not the time to be cutting this essential benefit. Food insecurity has been associated with higher incidence of chronic illness and higher health care expenditures. Disinvesting in programs that support healthful foods for all will only further perpetuate this problem. We need to be focused on solutions to curb food insecurity and chronic illness with a version of the Farm Bill that supports nutrition security and improved health for all. The current Senate version is a great example of that!
