That is rarely reflected in discussions about our nation's railroads, but facts back up that reality: "Data from the Federal Railroad Administration highlight significant safety improvements across the rail industry. The overall train accident rate in 2023 decreased 27% from 2000; the employee injury rate fell 50%; and grade crossing collision rate dropped 25%. Notably, railroads today boast lower employee injury rates than most over major industries, including trucking, airlines, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and even grocery stores." ??The majority of train derailments occur within rail yards, resulting in minimal community impact, while substantial investments by freight railroads in safety measures have contributed to a 49% decrease in mainline accidents since 2000, as reported by the Federal Railroad Administration.

From September 23rd to the 29th, Operation Lifesaver? is promoting railroad safety with their See Tracks? Think Train? Week. Their initiative is to prevent incidents with both railroad crossing and trespass. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, a total of 2,192 highway-rail grade crossing collisions occurred in 2023; New Jersey is 35 of those collisions. Since last year's horrible derailment took place in East Palestine, Ohio, railroad safety has been on everyone's radar. Railroad companies have been trying for years to implement "one person crews" as opposed to "two person crews" despite train derailments essentially happening everyday. Thankfully, most train derailments don't result in catastrophic events. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) creates and enforces rail safety regulations, administers rail funding, and researches rail improvement strategies and technologies. It is one of ten agencies within the United States Department of Transportation which is lead by Pete Buttigieg, a member of President Biden's Cabinet. President Biden also appointed Amit Bose to be FRA Administrator. Today, Secretary Buttigieg and Administrator Bose announced a new regulation that will go into affect which mandates two person train crews! This new regulation is obviously a win for rail labor unions, like SMART Transportation Division and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and the communities that have railroad tracks going through them! https://lnkd.in/gSxyuXdr

Four railroads have filed challenges in federal appeals courts, arguing against the new rule requiring two-person train crews, stating that it is arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion by the Federal Railroad Administration.
