#My #PhD #Journey #Reflections: Post 9/10 #Context: 4th year of PhD: Usually, the 4th year is the final year of the PhD program. I remember I had to do more work than before because there were many things going on. For example, I had more teaching responsibilities in the final year, which required more time for preparation. I was continuously finalizing my articles and overall thesis, preparing one of them to submit to a journal. I was also applying for jobs and received some interview invitations, so I also needed to prepare for them. One has to understand that the final phase is challenging and requires more time commitment than before. #Recommendation: ·??????You should apply for jobs during the fourth year as I believe this approach is better compared to other candidates who first focus on finishing their PhD and then plan to start their job search. The earlier, the better, but at the same time, you should be confident that you will complete your PhD in 4 years. ·??????As you are in the job market, if you receive an interview call, prepare well. Try to understand the department's goals, explore their faculty, and try to link how you can add value to them. ·??????Discuss frequently with your supervisor about your plans to defend your PhD, as many steps and processes are involved. The more you communicate and discuss your plans with your supervisors, the more smoothly you can plan your defense. #phdresearch #phdlife #phdjourney

While you apply for Ph.D/Postdoc positions abroad, here are a few points to consider based on my experience. By considering these points, you can present yourself as a strong candidate and increase your chances of success. ? Invest time and read about the research of the lab you are applying to. By reading their work, you can connect your research work with them and you will have an idea how you can contribute to them. This is very important as it demonstrates your engagement and preparedness. ? Be prepared for questions about the understanding of the theoretical foundations. Review key concepts, recent advancements, and seminal papers in your field to ensure you're well-prepared to discuss them during the interview. ? Be ready to articulate how your skills, experiences, and research interests align with the goals and needs of the research group. Focus on how your skills can contribute to the group. ? Very important! Don't overlook the importance of showcasing your involvement in activities beyond academics and research. They are curious about the other activities/hobbies you are doing. He is also Editor in Chief of NEUROTECH FUTURES, a publication exploring humanity's inner frontiers through the lens of neurotechnology; they track funding across markets, commercial activity, regulatory developments, community events, and more. ?? Arianna Zuanazzi, PhD, is the Project Collaboration Specialist in the Research Department at the Child Mind Institute as well as a Resident Scholar at Sai Resident Collective, where she fosters interdisciplinary SciArt collaborations. Previously, she was a filmmaker with the Pratt Institute and coordinated event operations for Imagine Science Films' Symbiosis Competition, where scientists and artists collaboratively produced innovative short films. ?? Hasan Ayaz, PhD, is a Provost Solutions Fellow and Associate Professor at Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems. He directs the Neuroergonomics and Neuroengineering for Brain Health and Performance Research?core. His research interests include understanding human brain functioning using mobile neuroimaging in realistic and real-world environments, across the lifespan and from healthy to clinical conditions in collaboration with domain experts and clinical partners. Last Tuesday, in collaboration with YouReCa@KU Leuven, we launched a new event: PhD Career Talks – Exploring Job Opportunities Beyond Academia. ???
