Is lack of sleep making your caregiving duties more difficult? It might seem like falling asleep quickly would be easy after a long day of caring for your older adult, running errands, cooking, wrangling doctor’s offices and insurance companies, and working, but that’s not always the case. Unfortunately, stress, anxiety, and a never-ending To-do list prevent many caregivers from getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep they need.

It’s exhausting to wake frequently in the night to help your older adult. But it’s often necessary to make sure they don’t fall, wander out of the house, or accidentally hurt themselves. There are many reasons why seniors wake at night, but a top one is chronic pain. And if they’re sleeping in a position that doesn’t properly support their body, it can create extra pressure that increases their pain. By aligning and supporting their body, your older adult will sleep more comfortably. And hopefully, that will reduce the number of times they (and you) wake up during the night. We’ve rounded up 11 tips for adjusting your older adult’s sleep position so that it better supports their body and reduces pain at night – including pain from chronic health conditions. ?? As we welcome the longer days of summer, it's crucial to recognize the adjustments required in our caregiving routines. The shift to summer hour time, often marked by daylight saving adjustments, presents unique challenges and opportunities for caregivers and those under their care. Here are actionable tips to ensure a seamless transition: 1-Gradual Adjustment: Begin tweaking daily schedules slightly (10-15 minutes) a week in advance of the time change for a smoother transition. 2-Embrace Natural Light: Utilize the abundance of daylight to help regulate internal clocks, keeping curtains open during the day and dimming lights as evening approaches. 3-Maintain Consistent Routines: Stick to regular meal times, exercise, and activities as closely as possible to anchor the day. 4-Promote Good Sleep Hygiene: Ensure the sleeping environment is ideal - cool, dark, and quiet. Encourage relaxing activities before bed and limit screen time. 5-Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Adjust hydration and meal patterns to match the season's demands, opting for lighter, more frequent meals. 6-Plan for More Outdoor Activities: Leverage the extended daylight for outdoor time, which can uplift mood and increase physical activity. 7-Monitor and Adjust: Be observant of any signs indicating adjustment difficulties and be ready to tweak routines or seek advice as needed. 8-Take Care of Yourself: Remember, your well-being is as important as those you care for. Prioritize rest, hydration, and support. https://bit.ly/3TdO4eQ Embracing these tips can help maintain well-being and ensure a joyful summer for both caregivers and their charges. **Caregivers can experience a lot of stress due to the emotional and physical strain of caregiving.** Here are some ways caregivers can relax and take care of themselves: - Take breaks: Schedule short rest periods between activities and take time off without feeling guilty. - Exercise: Try taking short walks daily or at least three times a week. You can also try progressive muscle relaxation, which involves tightening and then relaxing each muscle group. - Practice stress-reduction techniques: Try meditation, prayer, yoga, or Tai Chi. You can also try visualization, which involves mentally picturing a calm and peaceful place or situation. - Listen to relaxing music: You can also try guided relaxation recordings. - Get enough sleep: Prioritize sleep and try to get a good night's sleep. - Eat well: Eat regularly scheduled meals and avoid processed foods and refined sugars. - Connect with others: Stay connected to family and friends who support you. You can also join a support group or seek counseling. - Ask for help: Make a list of ways in which others can help you, and practice saying "yes" when someone offers you help. - Take care of your health: See your health care professional and get the vaccines you need. Gentle Holistic Infant and Toddler Sleep Coach - Understanding Child Sleep & Behaviour - Truly Gentle Toddler Nightweaning - Parenting with Love and Connection
When it happens, I cannot answer but I can share some tips! ?? I remember when I was a Nanny, I had multiple families say to me, "they'll never settle with you." I honestly never worried! Your little one is truly capable of learning ways to settle with other caregivers as long as they feel safe, and have a loving and calm caregiver, sleep will come. It might take some practice and it might take longer than usual as they adjust but they will find their way. Tips to help: 1. Allow the caregiver to spend 1:1 time with them away from sleep. They will find their ways to calm when there's little upsets, frustrations or falls and this all helps with practice. 2. Practice on the easiest nap of the day, let them have a bit of 1:1 time ahead of the nap alone and don't worry about how they fall asleep, they may need to build more tiredness to be able to settle easier with someone else so allowing this is fair. It's probably best to leave them to try this alone because if their main caregiver that they're used to is there, they'll be caught between the two. 3. For bedtime, include the caregiver in the bedtime routine first, even the first few steps is enough. If we can get them into some steps in the bedroom, that's even better. They don't have to do the whole routine, just practice every day or two with them doing steps of the routine. (Book, song, ect.) Try not to have them doing steps your baby or child don't enjoy. 4. If feeding to sleep or bottle before sleep is the usual way, try doing this early one night and then heading off early enough so your little one is not too tired and they have time to connect before they get tired. Leaving the house is probably your best chance, especially if your baby is breastfed, I'm convinced they can sense and smell us no matter where we hide! ?? It's so much easier for the two of them to find their own way when they are alone and your baby is not torn between the two. It also allows the caregiver to take full responsibility and give this change their all. If it doesn't work out the first time, leave it a bit and keep practicing the other steps, trying again another time. Does your little one only settle with you?
