From in-house outsourcing to offshore units, shared services to capability centers, and my personal favorite, Center of Excellence (COE), these procurement & commercial setups have gone by many names. But one thing's certain: COEs are becoming increasingly important strategically. It's not just about saving costs anymore; it's about improving processes using specialized talents. However, challenges have remained consistent over time, mainly falling into three categories: 1. Stakeholder Alignment and Collaboration: Getting everyone on the same page can be tough. Whether it's internal teams like finance, operations, risk, and legal, or external partners like suppliers, alignment and collaboration are key. As COEs grow, expanding their scope for bigger projects becomes essential. Effective communication is key to ensuring everyone's on board with procurement objectives. 2.?Talent Management and Skill Development: Recruiting and retaining skilled commercial professionals who possess the necessary technical skills, industry knowledge, and strategic thinking can be difficult. It starts with finding the right leader to head the commercial COE is vital. They need a mix of process excellence, functional expertise, and the ability to advocate for COEs within the organization. COE leaders should also focus on risk management, compliance, and measuring performance with meaningful KPIs. 3.?Technology Adoption and Integration: Procurement technologies aren't just nice to have; they're a must. Digital solutions that work seamlessly with existing infrastructure are necessary to support all processes.
