Over the past two weeks, Asheville has been flooded with love. From local, state, and federal agencies (yes, they are ALL here, but that’s a different post). Joe, Hank, Alice and I have been doing shifts at a grassroots collection and distribution site. The generosity is staggering. Thank you, thank you, thank you! But the needs are now evolving. Our site alone could no longer accept water, clothing, OTC meds, and much more. They have SO much. And that’s only one site. Other mountain areas (Boone, Marshall, Spruce Pine, and countless others) may need supplies, but Asheville now has what it needs to meet folks basic needs. However, restaurants can’t open bc there’s no water, and many want to pay their staff regardless. Farmers can’t sell to restaurants, so they’re donating their produce for distribution by food banks. Since then, it has grown to?be the largest year-round farmers market in Toronto. Our cities don’t have to be boring, lacking culture, lonely, expensive and made of only concrete. Did you know that if you have a pacemaker fitted, you can include it in your Will to be donated to a dog in need, after you pass away? Pacemakers cannot be used for another human, and are removed before cremation, but they can help dogs with heart problems and potentially save their lives. You can arrange for the pacemaker to be sent to a vet of your choice after passing. Many pacemakers are simply thrown away, and dogs may die because people do not know about this simple and worthwhile option. Donating a pacemaker can even save the dog's owner the cost of a new one, which can sometimes make a crucial difference in affording life-saving treatment, and the death of a beautiful pet.

Sweet tooth, Guy?! ?????? ? Ocean rowing, like many endurance challenges, can often be thought of as an eating exercise, with some rowing thrown in! ?? ? Between the four of them, this team will probably consume a little over 20,000 kcal a day - currently they are on course for a 54 day crossing - which means in this row they will consume over a MILLION kcal! ?? ? Most of this will be in the form of dehydrated meals. These are simply fully cooked recipes, like spaghetti bolognaise, chicken tikka, beef stew, etc, but with all the moisture removed. They can then rehydrate these with filtered sea water. Having them in dehydrated form means they last, they're lightweight, and they take up less space. ? Only eating these high calorie meals can be challenging for the stomach when you're trying to consume about 5000 kcal a day each, so a large portion of their intake is in the form of sweets! These are high calorie, but easy to consume treats - and they'll eat between 1000 and 2000 kcal of these each day. ???? ? Every Guide Dog handler - and Guide Dog - is different. Part of building an effective team is finding the right dog for the client. Although a team working together can look like magic, we often don't see the communication and bond between a dog and their handler. The handler will direct the dog using their orientation skills, and the dog will help their handler navigate around obstacles, stop at kerbs and locate objectives. Some dogs are better at certain aspects of these "guiding skills" than others - so part of the matching process is understanding the dog's strengths and weaknesses and pairing them with a client with a complimentary skillset. The team works together to travel safely and confidently - it's not as magic as it appears! I grew up in rural Virginia with family that has been in farming and agriculture for generations.?In 2020, I was starting to think about my retirement from the National Guard and doing research for an organization that supports veterans, farmers, and the local community. I wasn’t expecting much, but at the top of my google results was Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture (great job with your #SEO)!?It’s not often that you find an organization that aligns to your personal experiences and values in a way that I’ve found with this amazing organization and Pamela Hess. Arcadia's mission is to cultivate vibrant local food systems that prioritize health, equity, and sustainability, from the farm forward. They are delivering on that mission and making an impact here in DC and beyond when their Veteran farmers go back to their local communities across the country. They working to reimagine our food systems so we can meet the needs of our under-resourced communities. This is important work that shapes our #future with #sustainable solutions. I’m sharing this broadly to help them generate the needed funds to support their mission.?Every dollar we raise will go toward:? 1. growing fresh healthy food for the community (1 million servings plus since 2016!)? 2. training military veterans to be farmers (230 from 22 states so far!)? helping build little appetites for fruits and veggies (13,500 children have been to Arcadia at farm camp and field trips since 2011!)? 3. leapfrogging the barriers low-income families have to access nutritious foods ($2 million worth of food sold and distributed in under-resourced neighborhoods since 2012.
