The Healthy Communities Collaborative (HCC) launched Action Teams, a dedicated group of community leaders and change-makers committed to advancing health and well-being across Butte County. ?? The mission of the Healthy Communities Collaborative is to improve the health and well-being of Butte County residents by preventing future mental and physical health disorders. ?? The HCC operates under core principles including Primary Prevention, Equity, Innovation, Data-Informed Decision Making, and Sustainability, which guide all activities and ensure they reflect the collaborative’s mission. ?? Action Teams play a crucial role in Phase Three, executing strategies and coordinating efforts to ensure the successful implementation of health initiatives. ?? Grant Applications Open: The grant program is designed to engage local nonprofit organizations in Butte County to develop and implement initiatives that significantly enhance community health in alignment with HCC’s strategic focus areas: Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, and Connection & Meaning. #USA ????: Delighted to join my fellow Evaluation Panel Reviewers for the Yield Giving Open Call & members of the Lever for Change network in sharing and amplifying the following exciting news: Today, MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving announced that 361 organizations are receiving $640 million for their work with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. This cohort of 361 outstanding teams from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico will enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. These community-led, community-focused organizations work in urban and rural settings, with individuals of all ages, focusing on a wide range of issues. Yet, they share a common sense of purpose: the Open Call awardees are all making positive change in their communities by reducing disparities in economic outcomes, education, health, and other critical issues. The Open Call received 6,353 applications and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. In the Fall of 2023, organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to a second round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to this cause, and underwent a final round of due diligence. In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount. The 279 organizations in the top tier of scores will receive $2 million each, and the 82 organizations in the next tier will receive $1 million each. Congratulations to all of the awardees! How can increased investment possibly occur as hospitals are often operating with little to no profit margin, among other financial challenges? Where can hospitals find funding to elevate community health when they often cannot cover operating costs? There is an increasing source of revenue many hospitals are capitalizing on for these increasing health and well-being initiatives. It is called philanthropy. Philanthropy is not a panacea to all challenges faced by hospitals and health systems. However, by harnessing the power of philanthropy, hospitals and health systems can close fair share deficits while making strategic investments in the drivers that determine our individual and collective health. Health care organizations who wish to build a planned giving program often take a huge misstep when they begin, prompting initial thoughts and questions such as: “Hey, I need a brochure. Who should I talk to about a website?” Or, “Some of our board members think we need to ask for planned gifts. Let’s do a mailing." Taking this Band-Aid approach isn’t how to build a program. Rather, it’s about building a culture—one that requires a team effort where all members of the philanthropy team are involved, from the back office to the front line. Yet, many organizations view starting a planned giving program as an effort only a subject matter expert can handle. Although there is some truth to this regarding specific aspects of sophisticated planned giving methods/vehicles, it’s far from the overall truth. Health foundations have a significant opportunity to harness the influence and involvement of board members as great allies in advancing the mission. Too often, however, board members begin their tenure with a significant disadvantage in that their roles and responsibilities have been poorly or shallowly defined and explained. Board members generally come to nonprofit organizations with the desire to affect positive change. They wish to leverage their unique skills, insights and influence to move the mission forward. Yet, many board members will confide they were thwarted in their intentions to contribute by not having access to the information needed to be successful. Given the competitive advantage board members can bring to the organization, it is essential to start and to continue supporting a high value relationship with each board member through access to information and tools. GUIDE | Grantmakers In Aging (GIA) released a new guide, "Care is Fundamental: How Funders Can Accelerate Vital Progress on Caregiving," drawing on interviews with seventeen leaders in philanthropy, including JAHF's Rani Snyder. The new guide shows how people across different sectors are stepping up to promote caregiving strategies, shift societal attitudes, create public-private partnerships and drive change. "Looking back, RAISE was a signal moment," says JAHF's Vice President of Program, Rani Snyder. "Prior to it, there had been no national approach to recognize and support family caregivers."
