"Working-Class Communities Feel 'Ignored and Disrespected' by Government" At a recent Dáil committee hearing, TASC Executive Director Dr Shana Cohen highlighted a concerning trend: growing distrust among working-class communities who feel overlooked by policymakers. This lack of direct engagement is allowing far-right misinformation to take hold by offering action where people feel ignored. Dr Cohen observed that policymakers often favour middle-class charity representatives over engaging directly with communities—a gap TASC is striving to close. The aim? In an election year full of opportunities to make history, here's another one. Lisa Middleton was the first trans person elected - to anything - in California. (How did we let Minnesota and Virginia beat us??) Now, she's running for the California state senate. In 2017, Lisa was elected to the Palm Springs City Council, where she helped improve local transportation and infrastructure, combat climate change, build more affordable housing, invest in public safety, and address the Coachella Valley’s homelessness crisis. As Mayor of Palm Springs in 2022, Lisa led the City’s economic recovery from the pandemic — helping small businesses reopen and create good-paying jobs. Plus, she raised two kids to be educators. What's not to like??? Lisa is in good company. Event co-organizer and Organizing To Win's number 3* fan Stephanie Wade opened up a conversation about inclusion and safety in her race for Seal Beach city council. Her co-conspirator in this event is none other than Fullerton city councilmember Ahmad Zahra, the first openly LGBTQ Muslim elected in the entire nation. What gives me faith that ADD International's new 10 year strategy will succeed? This photo from our strategy launch today sums it all up. It shows disability activists Run Vireak and Zenna Akuwa. The key to our strategy is that disability activists like Vireak and Zenna will be taking all the funding decisions. As Zenna told the participants in our launch about the participatory grant making she had been involved with: "It's more than Nothing about us without us. We own this!" It also shows Callum Aitken of People's Postcode Lottery. He spoke about how powerful and effective they have found long-term unrestricted funding to be and how it builds trust. Other funders like Ford Foundation are also backing our strategy. And funders are starting to work together to persuade other funders to provide fair and flexible funding.
