In an election year full of opportunities to make history, here's another one.
Lisa Middleton was the first trans person elected - to anything - in California. (How did we let Minnesota and Virginia beat us??)
Now, she's running for the California state senate.
In 2017, Lisa was elected to the Palm Springs City Council, where she helped improve local transportation and infrastructure, combat climate change, build more affordable housing, invest in public safety, and address the Coachella Valley’s homelessness crisis. As Mayor of Palm Springs in 2022, Lisa led the City’s economic recovery from the pandemic — helping small businesses reopen and create good-paying jobs.
Plus, she raised two kids to be educators. What's not to like???
Lisa is in good company.
Event co-organizer and Organizing To Win's number 3* fan Stephanie Wade opened up a conversation about inclusion and safety in her race for Seal Beach city council.
Her co-conspirator in this event is none other than Fullerton city councilmember Ahmad Zahra, the first openly LGBTQ Muslim elected in the entire nation.
The OC has seen a lot of change, but it's still Orange County ya'll. Shout-outs to barrier-breakers Stephanie and Ahmad.
Is there someone who deserves a shout-out for breaking barriers in your community? Tell me in the Comments!
