This article discusses the struggles of three post-9/11 veterans with obtaining prosthetics and proper care from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The veterans recount long wait times, bureaucratic hurdles, and a lack of understanding from the VA in regards to their needs. One veteran even had a part of his prosthetic repossessed due to a billing issue. “I had a body part repossessed because the VA couldn’t facilitate care.” The Independence Fund advocated for Veteran Matt Brown when he waited nearly two years for a proper-fitting prosthetic from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Matt’s story demonstrates the ongoing struggle so many Veteran amputees suffer through. Even after eventually receiving the proper prosthetic, ongoing treatment?proved?to be another challenge.
