. . . but they well could be! Reimagining the Potential of AVs Beyond the US Sandbox I appreciate the critical view on autonomous vehicles (AVs) in the recent article. While the current US approach feels -to me- more like a tech sandbox than a sustainable business model, there's a bigger picture to consider. Public transit often relies on massive subsidies to operate. Cities like Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong succeed because high density and strict car policies leave few alternatives. In many places, neither cars nor public transit alone can solve all transportation challenges efficiently. AVs can be a viable extension of public transport—if we look beyond profit and embrace public-private partnerships. By collaborating, we can ensure AVs fill gaps where transit isn't cost-effective or accessible. They can enhance mobility for everyone, not just a select few. The real transformative potential of AVs lies in emerging megacities. These rapidly growing urban centers have the chance to leapfrog traditional, car-centric systems. Instead of building the same broken infrastructures, they can use AV technology to create efficient, flexible, and sustainable transportation networks from the ground up. In these cities, AVs can provide access to jobs, education, and healthcare before there's funding for extensive public transit. They can prevent the development of car dependency, helping to design cities where excessive car use isn't necessary. AVs can complement public transit, not compete with it. They can fill gaps where transit can't reach, especially in sprawling urban areas and city centers. By reducing the need for parking, AVs free up valuable urban space that can be repurposed for parks, pedestrian zones, and community spaces—enhancing human well-being. With the right incentives and policies, we can prioritize AVs that don't require parking, helping us avoid the pitfalls that make transformation so challenging in established cities. We often focus on replacing cars in developed cities, which is important. But it's even better not to build car dependency in the first place. Let's aim for carless drivers, not just driverless cars. By integrating AVs thoughtfully and supporting them with the right policies and public-private partnerships, we can contribute to healthier urban development. While skepticism toward the current US deployment of AVs is understandable, we should recognize the broader potential of this technology. AVs could be key in creating sustainable, efficient, and inclusive transportation systems—especially where we have the chance to do things differently from the start. Let's not just aim to replace cars where they already exist; let's strive to build urban environments where dependence on cars is minimized from the outset. By embracing AVs within a framework of public-private partnerships and forward-thinking policies, we can truly transform urban mobility for the better. #publictransport #autonomousvehicles #smartcities
